Tracing the History of the Volvo Luxury Sedan Part III: The Volvo 960

The Volvo 960, released in 1990 as a 1991 model year vehicle represented the next evolution of Volvo luxury sedans, following the 760. The 960 was distinguished with softer edges, and a more flowing design both on the outside, and the inside.

Also distinct was a new 24 valve 6 cylinder engine, producing smooth power and minimal vibration. The 960 continued Volvo's tradition of phenomenal seats and amazing safety.

In 1995 the 960 was re-styled and refined even further. In 1997, the 960 became the S90, to distinguish itself with Volvo's new naming nomenclature (S representing sedan, V representing Versatility and C representing coupe).

Every Overseas
Delivery (OSD) buyer will have a different story to tell about their trip, but we’d like to tell you about our two weeks staying in 4 types of accommodations other than hotels. With hotels running a little more on the expensive side, and our prior positive experiences meeting wonderful people at B&Bs (owners and guests), it was an easy decision for us. That said, we both had to buy in that we were choosing an “adventure” that might have some surprises, as we set out
on the web to analyze and choose from the numerous options. So in this article, rather than tell you how wonderful the sites of Stockholm, Oslo and Goteborg were (they were, of course)
we’d like to tell you how we maximized our $2500 Volvo OSD saving with reasonably-priced places to stay.

First, we agreed that since we had never been to Scandinavia that there was more than enough to
do and see in just Norway and Sweden. From there, it only made sense to begin and end our vacation in Goteborg. We flew from Newark to Goteborg over a Sunday night, and did the obligatory sleep-walking Monday, scraping the surface of Goteborg to really just orient ourselves for our return at the end of the trip. Then a sound Monday night’s sleep in the Volvo-provided
hotel prepared us for Tuesday, pick-up day for us. For pick-up we’ll just say that experience was everything Pam Peffer, our OSD Coordinator, had described. By around 3 PM we were headed north on E6 toward Oslo. We had added the Scandinavia maps to our own Garmin but that didn’t come close to preparing us for Oslo’s “roundabouts” or the tunnels in central Norway. Eventually we got headed west out of Oslo on E18 toward our first B&B, only 15 miles from downtown. Back a dirt road in Sollihodga we found the Paradise B&B (no kidding, that is the name), run by Kate and Odd Thrana.

As advertised, our single cabin was within meters of the lake, and not advertised, also meters from the chicken coop. “Fresh eggs from the hens, vegetables, bread, jam, and juice is served in
your freedge”, as stated on their website, so breakfast is self-serve. With only two cabins, we knew our car’s first night out of the factory was safe, right outside our cabin door.

Wednesday morning we struck out for Flam to see the fjords. Being mid-June, the E16 was open
although we often had to drive around trucks removing boulders dislodged over the winter. That night we stayed in a “row cabin” in nearby Aurland, at the Vangsgaarden Gjestgiveri, just a few meters from the fjord itself – and so quite the photo op.

Thursday, after taking the Flam Railway ride, we headed back to stay with Kate and Odd for two
nights straddling our Friday in Oslo; tip: park at the KonTiki museum in Bygdoy and take the ferry into Olso. Saturday we had our longest drive, all day across the E20 to the Malarhojden suburb of Stockholm, and the ATUM B&B , run by Christina Ohlin. Thursday morning
we packed up and headed back to Gotegorg. For our last accommodation we reserved a 3-night rental of a private furnished apartment in the Antilleriagatan section of Goteborg.

We’re sure no matter where you go, or where you stay you will find the hosts to be friendly
and helpful (and speaking English), and you will have a fantastic and unique
journey.

Tracing the History of the Volvo Luxury Sedan Part II: The Volvo 760

This month marks the 30th anniversary of one of Volvo's most important vehicles...the 760. Introduced in 1982, the 760 was originally designed to replace the 200 series Volvo which had been in production since 1975. Strong sales of the 200 allowed it to continue on, with the 760 series being positioned as a premium model.

With a long list of standard equipment the 760 continued the tradition started by the 164, which was a reliable and comfortable large sedan with a lot of equipment for a lot less money than a modern German luxury vehicle. The 760 also had an available turbo-charged engine, a rarity in its day.

The 760 would eventually be replaced by the 960 in the early 90s. Today's Volvo S80 flagship luxury sedan can be traced to the 760, and it shares the same mission of providing luxury at a value...and of course, above all...safety.

It's always sad when the automotive world gets smaller...and that's what happened this month with the announcement of Saab's bankruptcy. You might recall we operated Lehman Saab for over 25 years before selling that franchise, so it is hard to see that company go.

Tracing the History of the Volvo Luxury Sedan: The 164

Volvo's flagship luxury sedan, the S80, has been around for almost 15 years but its history stretches far beyond that. Introduced nearly 45 years ago, the 1969 Volvo 164 was the first of a long line of large Volvo luxury sedans.

It featured a big six cylinder engine, a leather interior, and plenty of room...much like today's S80. The Volvo 164 was advertised as a smart luxury alternative to many pricy European sedans (hmmm...again, much like the Volvo S80) and helped to establish Volvo as a maker of high-quality products known for safety and comfort. Produced until 1975, the Volvo 164 paved the way for the 264,760, 960, S90 and ultimately the S80.

An Electric Future: The Volvo Plug-in Hybrid

With the Volvo Plug-in Hybrid the driver has the option of choosing what power source they want to use (electric, hybrid, power). In the XC60 hybrid there is a powerful 280 horsepower 4 cylinder turbo engine and an electric 70 horsepower engine. In combined mode the XC60 Plug in will achieve 50 miles per gallon. Expanding on its recent announcement of performance packages for certain models with T5 engines, Volvo Cars of North America (VCNA) today announced factory-authorized performance tuning software for several additional Volvo models will be available next week at Volvo retailers across the country.

The next wave of Polestar performance software packages will be available for 2011-2012 XC60, S60 and XC70 fitted with a T6 engine. The T6 performance software package carries an MSRP of $1,495 installed and goes on sale nationwide Dec. 5.

The T6 Polestar software package adds 25 horsepower and 30 lb.-ft. of torque, bringing the three carlines to 325 horsepower and 355 lb.-ft. of torque. Equally impressive is that the added power does not affect fuel consumption, as the efficient tuning of the engine only increases the power output when it is needed.

"Just a few weeks after announcing the performance package for select T5 models, we have already received tremendous feedback from our customers," said Chris Dauerer, VCNA's vice president of customer service. "With Polestar, we are able to deliver our performance-minded customers the enhanced driving package they have been looking for now across a variety of our carlines."

Currently, the Polestar performance software package is also available for the following carlines:

My Life With a Volvo XC90

OK, so I am a longtime Volvo owner...starting with a Volvo 240 DL, then a Volvo 850GLT, and currently a Volvo S60 T5. Each model was certainly an evolution over the previous model, growing more comfortable, and with more luxury features. The most important thing though, was that they all had that tangible Volvo quality and safety (which thankfully I didn't have to experience!).

Looking back at my list of Volvos, the 240 sticks out as an iconic symbol of Volvo's durability and versatility. I'm currently driving a Volvo XC90, and in a lot of ways...its Volvo's modern-day 240. Comfortable, durable....and extremely versatile. The seats alone are a work of genius...folding in 3 seperate sections, adjustable, and the 3rd row folds neatly into the floor. I've never been a really big fan of SUVs, but the XC90 has certainly changed my opinion.

It's easy to see that even after almost a decade in production the XC90 is STILL one of Volvo's highest selling models (another similarity it shares with the 240...although that model was produced for nearly 2 decades!).

With a ton of standard features (leather seating, 3rd row, Satelite radio, Bluetooth etc etc etc), the XC90 also has that classic Volvo trait of value as well.

A Connection of Vets and Volvos

Thanks to all the men and women of this country who have, or who currently are in the armed forces...your service will never be forgotten. Its because of your service that we here at Lehman Volvo have our jobs.

Back in the early 1950s Volvo did not have a presence in the United States. However, service men deployed over seas discovered these unique vehicles and took it upon themselves to ask Volvo to bring some of these cars over. They also brought these cars home themselves.

The rest of the story involves setting up a network of dealerships...and here we are today (that's the extremely short version!). So, thanks to the veterans of this nation for bringing us Volvo...but most importantly, thanks for your dedication and your service.

Safety in the Real World

There are a lot of claims from various car companies who say they are "as safe" or "safer than Volvo". While those claims refer to some studio-crash tests in very controlled environments, it is the real world where safety has meaning.

And it is in the real world in which Volvo's City Safety technolgoy has been proving its worth.

A newly published analysis from the Highway Loss Data Institute (HLDI) and the Insurance Institute for Highway Safety (IIHS) indicates that Volvo XC60s get into fewer low-speed crashes than comparable vehicles thanks to Volvo's City Safety technology, a standard feature on all XC60s.

HLDI examined claim frequency under property damage liability, bodily injury liability and collisions. Their data concluded frequency rates for the XC60 were lower than all other midsize luxury SUVs, specifically:

Claims under property damage liability coverage were filed 27 percent less often for the XC60 than other midsize luxury SUVs.

Claim frequencies for injuries for the XC60 were filed about half as often compared to other midsize luxury SUVs.

Collision claim frequencies for the XC60 were 22 percent lower than all other midsize luxury SUVs.

If the redesigned Volvo S60 has caught your eye, you’ll like that it held up well in crash tests, earning “Top Safety Pick” status from the Insurance Institute for Highway Safety. The S60 received the IIHS’s top score of “Good” in front, side, roof strength and overall rear crash protection tests. It also comes standard with electronic stability control. IIHS crash test data was impressive. “Measurements taken during the S60’s testing show a low risk of significant injury in a 40-mph frontal-offset crash. Head movement was well-controlled during the crash — reducing the possibility of a neck injury,” writes Cars.com. “During side-impact testing, the driver’s and rear passenger’s heads were protected from the 3,300-pound deformable barrier traveling at 31 mph (shown above).” The S60 did well in other IIHS tests. “In the roof strength test, IIHS found that the S60 can withstand an application of 4.95 times its curb weight, a figure that puts it second only to the Mercedes-Benz C-Class in the midsize luxury sedan class,” reports Left Lane News. “IIHS has not tested all of the S60′s rivals, but the Volvo does rank ahead of the Lincoln MKZ, Audi A4 and Lexus HS 250h.”

Well we had a lot of great Volvo stories, so it was hard to pick a winner...but in the end one story stood out. It was provided by Mike Kays. Here is his Volvo story:

Mike Kays "I always enjoyed our 2006 XC90, but learned last year just what a great car it is. I arrived home in York from a long trip on the evening of a "big snow". Our home is at the top of a hill, and as I drove into our development I found my neighbors in their various cars, stuck at the bottom of the hill. It was incredibl...e to see the collection of vehicles not able to make the climb. There was a BMW, an Acura, and other cars all spinning their wheels with no progress. I offered each of my neighbors a ride, and shuttled them up the hill to their homes in my XC90. They were amazed how easily the Volvo climbed the hill. I know that that experience helped sell at least two more XC90s...one of my neighbors purchased one soon after, and I purchased a replacement 2011 XC90 just last week. Love that car! Thanks Volvo!"

This month, Volvo is launching the All New 2011 Volvo S60. As part of that launch, Volvo invited me to participate in the Volvo Overseas Delivery. After all of these years of selling the Overseas Delivery experience, I was going to go to Sweden to see it for myself. My husband Todd and I were one of the first to drive the new S60 T6 AWD and let me tell you - the car is AMAZING and you will NOT be disappointed!

I have been telling my clients for years that this is the greatest way to purchase their Volvo, but now I was going to be able to see for myself. So is it really "too good to be true"? Everyone speaks English and they even drive on the right side of the road. On our third day there, we took a short bus trip to the island of Marstrand. A short ferry ride over to the island took us to a completely different world. No cars allowed on the island, cobblestone everywhere you walked, and a fortress that sits high in the middle of the island. After our 3 day stay in Gothenburg, we took the high speed rail to Copenhagen, Denmark. We chose to travel this way so that we could enjoy the scenery. It was a wonderful train ride, very affordable, and we were even served lunch and all of our drinks were complimentary.

Our stay in Copenhagen was amazing. We stayed in the Nyhavn district which is the famous canal with the multicolored houses on both sides. It was like one big party every day with locals gathering with their beers while they cheered and clapped for all of the boats coming in to dock. The best "tourist" activity is the harbor tour which takes you through all of the canals of Copenhagen. Our hotel, Nyhavn 71, is a famous hotel that was once a warehouse for the Oriental Spice Company. Built in the 1600s, it was renovated into a hotel with all of the original fir beams still exposed.

I highly recommend the Volvo Overseas Delivery experience. You get a complimentary trip with hotel stay and the best souvenir of all - a brand new Volvo!

When Volvo first turned their front wheels...

If you know a bit of Volvo's history you might think 1993 was the first year that Volvo introduced their front-wheel-drive vehicles with the 850...but you would only be partially correct. 1993 was the first year for the US debut of front-wheel-drive Volvos, but 8 years earlier Volvo unveiled the 480 to the European market...

Volvo 480 ES was the result of a strategic product planning project. This project - which was all about the future Volvo cars and called Galaxy - contained several suggestions for future vehicles. To put it simple, Galaxy resulted in the 400 and 850 cars. Work progressed on two fronts; at Volvo Car Corporation in Gothenburg with the larger car and in the Dutch company Volvo Car B.V. with the compact models.
Volvo 480 ES was the first model to emanate from a whole new generation of cars from Volvo Car B.V., Volvo Car Corporation's Dutch subsidiary that built its cars in the Born plant. It wasn't just the technical layout with front-wheel drive that made the 480 different from other Volvos, it was also sleek and boldy wedge-shaped, a 2 + 2 seater with its rear body shaped like an estate car and a glass tailgate. It also featured pop-up headlamps and the classic Volvo grille with its diagonal ribbon was merely hinted - positioned below the front bumper. Its exterior was the work of Dutchman John De Vries with Briton Peter Horbury being responsible for the inside. The latter was later to become head of design at Volvo Cars.

The K-PAX Racing Volvo S60s finished first and second in the second race at the Race Keeper World Challenge VIR Grand Prix presented by MTM Special Ops Watch at Virginia International Raceway. The result clinched the 2010 GT Drivers’ Championship for Randy Pobst and the Manufacturers’ title for Volvo.Andy Pilgrim took advantage of his pole position start, built a large lead in the number 8 K-PAX Racing Volvo S60 and took the victory, his first of the season. Not too far behind was team mate Randy Pobst, who finished second in the number 6 K-PAX Volvo after starting the race from the third position. James Sofronas finished third in a Porsche 911 GT3.

OK, so a break from the news of Lehman Volvo to present a really cool story from our Jaguar Harrisburg dealership...

Hole-In-One prizes are offered at many Golf Outings throughout the country, but actual winners are far and few between. That wasn’t the case at Hershey Country Club Saturday, July 31st as Henry Blough of Elizabethtown found out.
On the 17th hole of the Hershey West Golf Course, Henry reluctantly took the advice of a member of his foursome, and exchanged the club that he was going to hit for an Adams Hybrid club. It turned out to be good advice as Henry hit a solid shot that flew about 160 yards, then rolled forward and to the left and dropped in the hole. Henry was excited enough to get the hole-in-one, yet at that point he didn’t even realize what prize was attached to the hole. Henry was playing in the Member/Guest Tournament in which a “hole in one” prize is sponsored annually by Lehman Volvo and Jaguar Harrisburg.
Jaguar Harrisburg had supplied a stunning brand-new 2011 Jaguar XF sports sedan as the big prize, valued at over $50,000. Once he found out that he won the car, Mr. Blough was ecstatic, and in disbelief. The vehicle is now being driven by his wife, Sharon.
“After more than 20 years of providing cars for hole in one contests, we finally gave one away”, says Ray Bromley, Dealer Principal of Jaguar Harrisburg. This was the first time in the organization’s history that a Hole-in-One vehicle prize was actually won.

Volvo launched this special unit to measure the effects of the safety belt in traffic accidents, a few years after Volvo engineer Nils Bohlin had invented the three-point safety belt.Volvo wanted to develop better and safer products in the future, and realized the importance of understanding exactly what happens to the car's occupants and the car itself in the course of an accident.

Sporty Volvos: A History

When the 2011 Volvo S60 T6 hits the road in a few months, it is said by Volvo to be "the most Dynamic driving Volvo of all time". Not too many people(outside of Volvo enthusiasts) know it, but there have been quite a few Sporty Volvos through-out the years...and those that have owned these cars understand that Volvos can be very fun to drive.

1961 Volvo P1800: Volvo's first sports coupe, the P1800 was more tuned to styling, but it was also a step in a sporty direction. The P1800 ended production in 1973 with a 2 door wagon variant called the P1800ES

1979 Volvo 242 GT: A sport trim level of the 240 series, the 242GT featured style and functionality. This vehicle would be replaced by the 240 Turbo in 1981, which featured more power and introduced a long period of high output turbo motors.

1983 Volvo 242 Turbo Group A: Also known as the "flathood" 240, this Super-amped up 240 was tied into Volvo's racing program, and the car featured flat-out performance.

1995 Volvo 850 T5-R: Another specialty variant, of the 850 series, that came from Volvo's Racing development. The 850 T5-R featured 240 horsepower, and was re-named simply the 850R from 1996 to 1997. This was the first of a series of "R" cars.

1998 Volvo V70R: The V70R was produced from 1998 to 2000 and featured increased power through each version. The change for Volvo was this was the first high-performance all-wheel-drive Volvo.

2004 Volvo S60R/V70R: The S60 and V70R were produced until 2007, featuring 300 horsepower, all-wheel-drive, and adaptive chassis setting. These features continues with the 2011 S60!
2008 Volvo C30: The C30 is Volvo's current entry level sports model. Featuting 227 horsepower from a turbocharged 5 cylinder engine, the C30 is fun to look at, and drive.

After 3 rounds, Volvo not only leads the Manufactures points (ahead of Porsche, Dodge Viper and Nissan GT-R), but also drivers points, with veteran racer Randy Pobst in first place and teammate Andy Pilgrim currently in 4th.

Plane VS. Volvo....Volvo wins

If a picture is worth 1,000 words....the photo here would talk about safety in a big way. That is what is left of a small plane when it collided with a Volvo XC60 crossover.

According to reports, the plane was landing when it quickly took off again before appearing to try a second landing. This second attempt lead the small aircraft into the back end of the Volvo. Officers are still not clear on whether this was a mechanical or human error.
Despite having their Volvo completely totaled, both the driver and the passenger immediately got out of their wrecked ride to ensure that the pilot, who was pretty banged up from the car, was out of harm’s way.

State Final Safe Driving Competition

The local High School Safe Driving Competitions came to a conclusion last week with the state final in Harrisburg. Lehman Volvo provided the students with 2 stunning Volvo C30s for the driving course.The event, hosted by the Pennsylvania Motor Truck Association pitted the best finishers from local area high schools against each other in written, slide perception and driving. The state final was held at the Radisson in Harrisburg.
Each participant gave their best effort, as there was a total of $10,000 in scholarship funds at stake. Finishing in third place was Josiah Groff of Conestoga Valley, in second was Bill Diehl of Eastern York and the top prize went to Colin Gelbaugh of Carlisle.
Lehman Volvo is proud to be part of the competition, which helps young drivers understand the importance of skill and perception on the road.

Mechanicsburg Middle School’s Work of Art

Barry Hamilton’s and Edie Genden’s sixth grade classes from Mechanicsburg Middle School were named the grand prize winners of the OCEANS classroom mural contest.
The contest, inspired by Disneynature’s OCEANS and sponsored by Volvo, Wyland Foundation, and Frederix Art Canvas, took place from Apr. 5 – Apr. 22 and drew more than 29,000 students across 39 states. Participating students painted 50 sq.-ft. murals depicting oceanographic scenery and marine life.
Ray Koch’s seventh-grade art students from Kingston High School in Kingston, Ark. took second place in the contest and tied for third were Deborah Thatcher’s fifth grade art students from Lakeview Elementary in Cudahy, Wis., and Adriana Sandoval’s art class at Miami Shores Community Center & Home Schoolers of Miami Enrichment in Miami, Fla.
The grand prize winners will receive $1,500 worth of Frederix Artist Canvas, $500 for art supplies, a classroom set of tickets to see Disneynature’s OCEANS, and signed artwork by renowned marine life muralist Wyland.
