The Future Arrived 30 Years Ago

Sometimes an idea is so good that it lives on long after its creation. That is the case with the Volvo LCP2000 Concept Car, which debuted 30 years ago. This concept showed a great way to achieve excellent fuel economy through 4 cylinder engines with lightweight components.

Weighing in at just 1,543 pounds the LCP2000 (which stands for Light Component Project) returned 60 miles per gallon and featured aluminum and carbon fiber construction. The LCP2000 also featured alternative fuel technolgoy. Pretty advanced ideas for the year 1983.

The DrivE engines are both light weight and economical. But in addition, the new engines are also very powerful, with 240 horsepower (a bit more than the 90 horsepower offered in the LCP2000). High fuel economy, weight reduction AND performance oriented power. Now that's an idea worth developing....
