Why Use Top Tier Fuels in Your Volvo?
Article by Jason McKinsey
Over the years I have enjoyed assisting countless Volvo owners. Working at the service desk for the last 20+ years has brought many Volvo questions to my attention. I hope to address some of these in my monthly articles. I am open to any topic pertaining to your Volvo and welcome your suggestions for future articles.
This month I will be talking about the use of Top Tier fuels and what they mean to you and your Volvo. Top Tier fuel was a standard developed in 2004 to protect sophisticated engines from carbon build up in the intake and fuel systems of your engine. So why would it matter if your Volvo has a buildup in the intake or fuel system? Here is a list of issues caused by buildup in the intake and fuel systems:
- Hesitation accelerating
- Knocking or pinging
- Reduced fuel economy
- Rough idle
Not exactly what you are looking for from your new or gently pre-owned Volvo. Independent studies have shown using a top tier fuel would cause 19 times fewer carbon deposits and reduce intake deposits inside the engine by 42-72%. I would relate this to a low carb, yet high protein meal for your Volvo. Top Tier gasolines provide an extra level of engine protection. By supplying additional additives to the fuel, it decreases engine deposits and creates increasing engine performance over the life of your Volvo. The effect of engine deposits in the independent studies could be seen within 4,000-5,000 miles. Thinking about how long the average Volvo lasts, imagine the effects!
Please see my links below for additional information. Next month I will discuss the correct fuel octane and what it means to you and your Volvo.
