Jason’s Journal: Don’t Just Stop, Think About It

Maintaining a vehicle’s brake system has always been an important part of automotive safety. Specifically in Volvos, it is critical to choose the correct type of brake pads and rotors because they not only provide the ability to perform the everyday duties of bringing your Volvo to a smooth controlled stop, but they also now interact with many other systems in the vehicle. These systems include:
  • Antilock Brakes 
  • Automatic Braking 
  • City Safety 
  • Collision warning with auto brake 
  • Pedestrian detection 

All of these systems work in conjunction with the braking system to increase safety for the driver, passengers, pedestrians and other drivers. Using a lesser quality brake pad or brake rotor may reduce the effectiveness of these safety systems and increase the stopping distance of your Volvo. Even a reduction of a few feet in stopping distance can make the difference between a close call and a costly collision with another vehicle.

Volvo Genuine brake rotors are specifically designed for Volvos to achieve optimum braking performance, and are rigorously tested in lab and road experiments. Volvo brake rotors are engineered using graphite and other high quality materials, which provides maximum performance and longevity. There are several different materials used in brake pads: semi-metallic, ceramic, and organic, are the most common. Here is your Volvo Safety...

What you see above is the result of an accident between a tractor trailer, a Volvo XC60...and another tractor trailer. If you think the end result is devastating, just be aware...the driver and passenger of the Volvo XC60 walked away from this accident with only minor injuries. This accident happened in Brussels a couple of days ago, here is some of the report from their newspaper: A car containing a mother and daughter crashed into the back of a truck. The vehicle disappeared completely under the rear end of the heavy truck. To make matters worse, a heavy truck crashed into the Volvo XC60 from behind. The result was a lot of scrap. The emergency services had to rescue the two women from the car, who were trapped for more than one hour. The fire brigade had to cut off the roof of the vehicle before being able to set them free.
