Small but Mighty: The Volvo EX30 Sets New Environmental Standards for Electric Vehicles

On June 7th, 2023 Volvo released the first of its kind—the EX30. But what can a small, all-electric SUV do in a big world where sustainability and environmental responsibility are at the forefront? Apparently, a lot.

Built with safety first and designed to have the smallest carbon footprint of any Volvo car to date, Volvo was able to reduce its total carbon footprint by 25 percent when compared to other electric models like the C40 and XC40 Recharge.

One way Volvo was able to achieve this is by ensuring the new EX30 has zero tailpipe emissions. Not only does this contribute to a lower CO2 footprint but it also largely improves air quality.

"Our new EX30 is a big step in the right direction for our sustainability ambitions,” said Anders Kärrberg, Volvo Cars’ global head of sustainability. “By 2025, we aim to reduce our overall CO2 emissions per car by 40 per cent from 2018 levels through a 50 percent reduction in overall tailpipe emissions, and a 25 per cent reduction in emissions from our operations, raw material sourcing and supply chain – all on the way towards our ambition of being a climate neutral company by 2040."

Efforts to reduce the overall carbon footprint in the EX30 don't stop here as the Volvo EX30 continues to pack a mighty punch with its minimalistic size and use of renewable and recycled material.

Exterior Materials

Aluminum and steel are known to be two of the biggest contributors to production-related CO2 emissions. However, smaller cars take less material to produce thus instantly reducing the amount of aluminum and steel used.

Volvo has taken it further by guaranteeing that around 25 percent of all aluminum and 17 percent of all steel and plastics used in the EX30 are recycled.

Interior Materials

Around 30 percent of decor parts use recycled plastic, plus recycled and renewable surfaces.

Volvo has chosen to use a variety of recycled and renewable materials inside the EX30 for seats, dashboards, and doors. The material used includes denim fibers that would otherwise be waste, flax, and a wool-blend that contains around 70 percent recycled polyester.

In sum, the EX30 is the smallest, fully electric SUV released by Volvo and while bigger is thought to be better, it's simply not the case here. Rather, bigger has been re-defined.

Volvo has taken a several strategic steps throughout the entire production of the EX30 from design to transportation so you can have a safer and more environmentally responsible driving experience.
