Top Safety Pick+ awarded to the All-New Volvo XC90

The Volvo XC90 has been award a Top Safety Pick+ rating, the highest possible safety rating from the Insurance Institute for Highway Safety (IIHS). This prestigious rating is only given to vehicles that achieve full scores in all crashworthiness and front crash prevention tests, as well as preventive and protective safety performance.

The crashworthiness category tests the vehicle’s small overlap, moderate overlap, side roof strength, head restraints and seats. The XC90 received full points for every crashworthiness test, and was believed to be superior in front crash prevention (all thanks to Volvo’s City Safety system which is standard in every new Volvo).

“Every Volvo currently rated by IIHS has earned a Top Safety Pick+, we are the only automaker that can claim that proud distinction,” said Lex Kerssemakers, President and CEO of Volvo Cars of North America, “the XC90 is the next step in our Vision 2020, which states that no one should be killed or seriously injured in a new Volvo car by the year 2020.”

Watch the Volvo XC90 be tested in the IIHS small overlap test. Notice how the boron steel cage around the driver’s compartment remains completely intact—just as designed! The XC90 stays on its path and does not stop abruptly and spin out like so many vehicles do on the small overlap test.
