No Surprise to us...IIHS Awards Volvo Once Again

Volvo Cars has once again performed very well in the annual IIHS Top Safety Pick+ Awards. In this year's honours list four Volvo cars made the Top Safety Pick+ grade: the S60, V60, S80 and XC60. Volvo Cars was the only European brand with more than two models on the list.

“Volvo Cars' commitment to real-life safety and our Vision 2020, which states that no one will be killed or seriously injured in or by a new Volvo car, underlines our approach towards continuous improvement in this field. At Volvo Cars we focus on real-life safety - reflecting the many and varied causes and results of car accidents. It is of course a wonderful thing that we receive such honours and recognition for our advanced safety innovations from leading safety institutes,” said Dr. Peter Mertens, Senior Vice President Research & Development at Volvo Cars.

The Tops Safety Pick+ award criteria have grown tougher in the last twelve months, with increased demands around the standard for front crash prevention. To meet the new criteria cars making the Top Safety Pick+ grade must offer the ability to stop or slow down without driver intervention before hitting a target in IIHS tests at 12 mph, 25 mph or both.

Volvo Car’s front crash avoidance technology, City Safety, which is standard in all new Volvos, effectively helps to detect and brake automatically to mitigate or prevent a car to car rear end collision without driver intervention. Volvo’s City Safety technology has been shown to reduce insurance claim frequency by 16 percent*.

“Volvo Cars has received much recognition during its long history of safety driving the industry forward. A perfect example of this is the three-point safety belt, invented at Volvo in 1959 and now used globally by all car makers. With the sales start of the All-New XC90 in 2015 Volvo Cars will offer the world’s most advanced crash avoidance technology as standard,” said Thomas Broberg, Senior Safety Advisor at Volvo Cars.

The Cross Country Family is Growing: The All-New Volvo V60 Cross Country

Say hello to the next generation of Cross Country...the all-new Volvo V60 Cross Country. Available in early 2015, the V60 Cross Country is the perfect fit for those with an active lifestyle. Plenty of room for gear, plenty of ground clearance to get virtually anywhere you want to go. Taking the Cross Country concept to a new level of sportiness and style.

Here's the press release from Volvo:
“We are delighted to add the third true Cross Country model to our product portfolio. The successful combination of dynamic styling and rugged capability places the V60 Cross Country in a class of its own,” said Lex Kerssemakers, Senior Vice President Product Strategy and Vehicle Line Management at Volvo Cars.
The Cross Country brand has a long and distinguished heritage. Volvo Cars was the first premium brand to offer increased all-road capability and styling on its wagons as far back as 1997 when it introduced the V70 Cross Country, creating a whole new type of car experience that has since captured the imagination of the motoring public.
Reflecting Volvo’s Scandinavian heritage and love of nature and adventure, the V60 Cross Country brings together the best of both worlds – a sporty, connected yet comfortable driving experience with the freedom to explore new horizons.
Sporty capability
“With ground clearance increased 65mm compared to the V60, the Cross Country’s sturdy construction offers unparalleled control on and off the beaten track, coupled with an enhanced sporty driving experience thanks to torque vectoring technology and corner traction control. The V60 Cross Country really is a getaway car – enabling an adventurous lifestyle in pure rugged form,” said Lex Kerssemakers.
Offering new Cross Country 18” and 19” wheels, the V60 Cross Country comes with high profile tyres, adding comfort and off-road aesthetics, reducing road noise and providing added wheel protection whether climbing kerbs or negotiating rocky roads.
Rugged individualist design
Central to the Cross Country concept is the expression of go-anywhere capability and rugged design. It caters to those who have an active lifestyle, favoring the dirt road over the paved, handling either with ease. This is manifested in the V60 Cross Country through explicit design cues that heighten the adventurous nature of the car. With increased ground clearance, skid plates front and rear, side scuff plates and fender extenders, the V60 Cross Country conveys an imposing, muscular presence that underlies its capable nature, while integrated tailpipes reflect its sporty dark side. To complement the capable exterior styling, sports seats in black leather with distinctive brown stitching will be available from launch, while two new two-tone leather upholsteries will be offered to coincide with the EU and Rest of World Launch in early 2015.
The US and Canada will get the first V60 Cross Country cars, and they will launch with Volvo’s iconic five cylinder 250 hp petrol engine with All-Wheel Drive coupled to an automatic transmission delivering a highly competitive 23 mpg.

More perfomance from fewer cylinders: The 450 Horsepower Drive-E Concept

If anyone knows turbocharging, it is Volvo. Since 1981 Volvo has been the most consistent auto-maker using innovative turbocharging technology. So what can Volvo do with an ultra modern 4 cylinder engine? Quite a lot it turns out...

“When we launched the Drive-E powertrain family, our aim was to deliver the most advanced 4-cylinder engines in the industry based on emissions and fuel consumption relative to performance and drivability. We knew that 320 hp in our petrol configuration was just a starting point. The 450 hp High Performance Drive-E Powertrain Concept, demonstrates this ambition and the versatility of the Drive-E Powertrains,” says Dr. Peter Mertens, Senior Vice President for Research and Development at Volvo Car Group.
The 450 hp High Performance Drive-E Powertrain Concept is based on a set of technologies not usually found in a four cylinder engine. The engine utilizes two parallel turbochargers, which are fed by an electrically powered turbo-compressor. The compressed air from this unit, rather than being fed to the cylinders, is instead used to spool up the two parallel turbochargers. Fuel is fed by a dual fuel pump working at 250 bar pressure. With this kind of power density, this triple boost installation and unique fuel system, enables a very dynamic drivability without any turbo lag, compared to a mono-turbo.
“There are several high power small size applications where one large turbo is used to create a high level of power available from other manufacturers, but the driving experience suffers due to slow engine response. We felt that with our heritage of being among the first car companies to embrace and offer a broad range of turbo technology since 1981, that we could improve this,” says Michael Fleiss, Vice President of Powertrain Engineering at Volvo Car Group.
The High Performance Drive-E Powertrain Concept attracted the attention and involvement of Volvo Cars suppliers AVL, Denso and Volvo Polestar Racing at an early stage, which allowed theories and technologies from racing applications to be infused in the development process.

Another Neat Overseas Delivery Story...

Here you see Susan Goodrow and her new 2014 Volvo XC90 that she picked up in Sweden. She ordered the vehicle through Lehman Volvo via the Overseas Delivery program. For those who don't know...the Overseas Delivery program combines a new Volvo with a complimentary trip for 2 to the Volvo factory in Torslanda, Sweden. While in Sweden you can drive your new Volvo for up to weeks with complimentary registration and insurance. Volvo will provide you with red tourist plates. When you are done your European vacation, you simply give the car back to Volvo, fly home, and the vehicle arrives at your dealership in a few weeks.

When Susan received her Volvo, she noticed the European plates read "EKG 622." The neat coincidence is that Susan is a registered nurse (EKG), and her wedding anniversary is June 22nd! A great memento for Susan and another neat Overseas Delivery story.

Susan even sent us a Volvo selfie for our "See Your Selfie in a Volvo" Photo contest while she was in Sweden. She summed up here experience by saying: "What a great way to get your new car. Recommend it to all!"  As one of the top Overseas Delivery dealerships in the country, we couldn't agree more! Thanks Susan, here's to many happy miles from everyone at Lehman Volvo.

Creating Real World Safety in a Test Environment

Volvo has a mission: That by 2020, no one will be killed or badly injured when inside a new Volvo. That’s why they’ve has had a long-term goal to drastically improve overall safety features of their vehicles and create an improved driver experience.
To help with their mission, Volvo has opened AstaZero, the world’s very first full-scale test environment for future road and traffic safety, located near the Volvo Cars headquarters in western Sweden. The main goal at AstaZero: creating active safety systems, which will help prevent accidents in the future.
The AstaZero facility is extremely flexible and boasts a design that allows for the construction of one-of-a-kind environments. “You can simulate all types of real-world traffic scenarios. At most proving grounds, the options are more limited,” explains CEO of AstaZero, Pether Wallin. For example, testing conditions can range from busy city roads to highways and multi-lane motorways and crossroads. Having all these conditions allows for the intrinsic study of how cars interact with moving objects—anything from other vehicles to pedestrians and animals.
“Safety testing under realistic circumstances is a prerequisite for developing our active safety systems,” says Anders Axelson of Volvo Cars Safety Centre. “The facility will play several important roles: not only will it help us meet our safety vision, developing cars that don’t crash, it will also help us further develop safety functions that will address non-motorists, such as pedestrians and cyclists.”
Not only will AstaZero serve as a place to perform safety research and development, work will also include the development and testing of autonomous driving technology, the idea that the car drives and the driver doesn’t necessarily need to have their hands on the wheel, which reduces accidents and improves safety. Additionally, work on advanced systems to help with driver fatigue and inattentiveness are currently underway.
”The Swedish automotive industry is at the leading edge of active safety,” says Axelson. “Thanks to AstaZero, we have great prospects for keeping our leading position. We’re the only car manufacturing company in the world to have set a goal of zero traffic fatalities for a specific date, and we’re the only country in the world whose government supports a zero traffic fatalities vision.”

Parking Made Easy: Some of the safety behind the All-New Volvo XC90

Designed around modern car buyers’ expectations of smart functionality, the all-new Volvo XC90 features a set of innovative solutions that make tricky parking situations and manoeuvring in tight spaces easy.

The IntelliSafe support technologies include an extended Park Assist Pilot, which now also offers automatic reversing into a parking bay as well as entering and exiting a parallel parking spot. The XC90 can also display a digitally created bird’s-eye view of the 360° area around the car on the large centre screen.

“Several studies by research institutes reveal that up to two-thirds of interviewed motorists feel uncomfortable in tight parking situations. Options such as the extended Park Assist Pilot and bird’s-eye view function turn these potentially stressful situations into comfortable, precise and safe manoeuvring,” says Dr Peter Mertens, Senior Vice President Research and Development of Volvo Car Group.

The further-developed Park Assist Pilot facilitates both parallel and bay parking by taking over and operating the steering wheel while the driver handles the gearbox and controls the car’s speed.

Ultrasonic sensors detect the parking space

The parking manoeuvre is based on information from twelve ultrasonic sensors around the car. When the driver activates the Park Assist Pilot in a parallel parking situation, the sensors start to scan the side of the car for empty parking slots. When a parking slot measuring a minimum of 1.2 times the car’s length is detected, the driver is notified by an audible signal and a message in the instrument cluster. In a bay parking situation, the slot needs to be the width of the car plus one meter.

The display then guides the driver step by step via texts and animations in the instrument cluster until the car is parked.

A bird’s-eye view from above the car

The all-new XC90 also features a 360° Surround View that gives the driver a bird’s-eye view, an overview of the surrounding area, seen from a point above the car.

This bird’s-eye view is enabled by four concealed fish-eye cameras – one integrated into the front, one integrated in each of the door mirrors and one fitted above the rear number plate.

The 360° Surround View also gives the driver comfortable access to other views of the surrounding area such as front, rear and side views.

“The 360° Surround View is exceptionally useful in situations where the driver’s direct view is obstructed, such as leaving a tight driveway with obstacles on the sides or when reversing towards a trailer or caravan,” says Peter Mertens. “360° Surround View also provides great support during parking, for instance when you want to make sure that all parts of the car are within the lines of a parking spot.”

Cross Traffic Alert

The outstanding IntelliSafe solutions in the all-new XC90 also include Cross Traffic Alert, which covers the driver’s back when reversing out of a parking space. It warns of approaching traffic up to 30 metres on each side, alerting the driver with an audible signal and a warning on the centre screen.

Gamechanger: The All-New Volvo XC90 Plug-in Hybrid

Volvo has just announced the all-new XC90 will be the cleanest and most powerful SUV. Environmental care has always been a core value for Volvo and it really shows in the XC90…

Volvo Cars' all-new XC90 will offer an unrivalled combination of power and clean operation when it is launched early next year. The all-wheel drive seven seater offers drivers up to 400 horsepower but with carbon dioxide (CO2) emissions of around 60 g/km (NEDC driving cycle). There has never been an SUV offering this level of power this cleanly.

“There are no compromises when you drive an all-new XC90,” said Peter Mertens, Senior Vice President Research and Development of Volvo Car Group. “In the past you could either have power or low CO2 emissions. But with the all-new XC90 you can have both.”

The new XC90 offers a range of Drive-E engine options, all of which provide an outstanding combination of performance and fuel-efficiency.

“With our new Drive-E powertrains, we have created a family of intelligent engines with power curves that give exciting drivability at the same time as delivering world-beating fuel economy,” added Dr. Mertens.

Twin Engine technology

For the all-new XC90, the top of the range ‘Twin Engine’ will carry the badge ‘T8’ and be a plug-in electric car, hybrid car and high-performance car rolled into one.
Normal driving is conducted in the default hybrid mode. This utilizes a two-litre, supercharged and turbocharged Drive-E engine that powers the front wheels and an 80 hp (60 kW) electric motor that drives the rear wheels.

It uses the supercharger to fill in the bottom end of the power range to give the engine a big, naturally-aspirated feel, while the turbocharger kicks in when the airflow builds up. The electric motor on the rear wheels provides immediate torque.

But at the push of a button the driver can switch to quiet and emission-free city driving on pure electric power where the range will be around 40 kilometres, and then, when needed, immediately revert back to the combined capacity of the petrol engine and electric motor, with its combined output of around 400 hp and 640 Nm of torque.

History Repeating a VERY Good Way.

The phrase "those who ignore history are doomed to repeat it" is one to remember. However, repeating history is not always a bad thing. 10 years ago Volvo unleashed the raw and powerful Volvo S60 R and V70 R. 300 horsepower, all-wheel-drive and unique styling made the R series highly desirable.

Flash forward 10 years and Volvo has repeated history with the all-new Volvo S60 Polestar and V60 Polestar. The concept is the same: a lot of power, phenomenal all-season handling, stunning styling. However, these cars go above and beyond what was capable a decade ago. The Polestar models are quicker in every way, have a higher quality interior, a lot more safety features, and are much more refined. Yes...history repeating itself can be good...but only if you improve upon it ;).

The Volvo S60 and V60 Polestars: Now coming down the production line

Good things take time....and the time is (finally) getting much closer until the all-new Volvo S60 and V60 Polestars land in the United States. The most powerful production Volvos to date, the Polestar models include more power, greater handling, and more style than most vehicles on the road.

Here's the press release:

The first Volvo S60 and V60 Polestar cars have left the Volvo Torslanda factory plant on their way to customers around the world as production has begun.

"We are very happy to see the first ever complete production cars from Polestar be built in the Volvo factory. It is a satisfying result of many hours of work by the people of Polestar and Volvo behind this,” said Henrik Fries, S/V60 Polestar Technical Project Manager.

Volvo Cars starts production of the new Volvo S60 and V60 Polestar

The Volvo factory in Torslanda celebrated 50 years recently with a total of over 6.8 million cars having been produced, starting with the Amazon model in 1964 and all the way to the new S60 and V60 Polestar today. The Polestar model also marks the first ever independent partner being introduced to the production process.

”We are delighted to see the first cars leave the factory and it has been an exciting journey together with Polestar to see these cars from the drawing board until the actual finalized product being produced with us on the factory line,” said Magnus Hellsten, Vice President Car Manufacturing Europe at Volvo Cars.

A total of 750 cars will be produced of the S60 and V60 Polestar model this year, heading to customers in Canada, the Netherlands, Japan, Sweden, Switzerland, United Kingdom and the USA.

Volvo Cars starts production of the new Volvo S60 and V60 Polestar

”It is an exciting process as there are many new and unique Polestar components that needs to work seamlessly in the Volvo factory without interrupting the production of other models. It was a truly proud moment to see the first Polestar blue cars on the production line together with the XCV70, S80 and other models. The cooperation with Volvo works really well and we are looking forward to an exciting future together,” said Fries.

The new Volvo S60 and V60 Polestar features a thoroughly developed chassis with high performance dampers and brakes which in combination with four-wheel drive and 350 hp from a turbo charged 6-cylinder engine creates a driver’s car for all year.

Always "Throwback Thursday" at the Parts Department

If you've ever been to the parts counter at Lehman Motors Volvo, you've noticed them... old Volvo ads, from a lot of different eras. Back when printed ads were the big thing, Volvo had a lot of clever headlines and advertisements in various magazines. Over the years (seeing as Lehman Motors has been around for decades), our employees have collected these ads and they hang proudly on the wall.

There are more however, like this poster-sized ad...that are not on display (currently). It's hard to find a location for everything!  Maybe we will have to start a rotation....

The $92,400 Volvo

The term "classic car" usually gets thrown around to describe any old car. However, the Volvo P1800ES is definitely a car that deserves the "classic" term, and apparently people are taking notice.
Case in point is the spotless 1973 example you see here. It just set an auction record high price for a Volvo car...nearing 6 figures.

Bonhams Auctioneers has sold a 1973 Volvo P1800ES Sport Wagon for the record sum of  $92,400 USD. It was at an auction at the Greenwich Concours d´Elegance in Connecticut, USA that the Swedish classic with just 13,000 miles on the odometer was sold. “As far as we know, this is a new world record for a classic Volvo”, a representative for Bonhams said.

This P1800ES has spent its entire life in Keene, New Hampshire, and been used very little by its three owners, the first of them keeping the car for 27 years. The red paintwork is totally original, so is the black leather upholstery and the car has sought after factory equipment as factory fitted A/C.

The presale estimate was $30,000 to $40,000,but it was bid strongly by a number of current and former Volvo dealers before ultimately selling to an overseas bidder for more than the double.
“The car was nicely presented, well preserved and totally original. It was key for a high price like this, a restorer would struggle to match the build quality of the factory in Gothenburg,” said Eric Minoff, specialist at Bonhams´ Motor Cars department.

Another Volvo Saved my Life Story...Close to Home.

June is National Safety Month and we have a personal story from the Volvo Saved My Life Club. What you see here is Lehman Motors Sales Consultant Mary Abruzzese's 2002 Volvo S60. Her husband Tim was driving in a downpour when a tractor trailer pushed a ton of water around the vehicle, forcing it to lose control.

The Volvo hit the guardrail, spun hitting the guardrail a second time. It then crossed over two lanes of traffic, and ended up in the middle of the grass median.  Both airbags deployed, and the front end of the car was completely crumpled. Tim's first thoughts after the accident..."I’m OK.  Not even a scratch!...I have to get another Volvo." This was Tim’s first Volvo, and we are happy to report he is safe and sound in his second one. Has a Volvo saved your life?

As Safe as a street rod can be....

With the street rods rolling into York county this weekend, we thought we would like to share our idea of the ideal street rod. What you are looking at is an actual street rod project using Volvo's first model, the 1927 OV4 as inspiration.

It's fitting to use a Volvo from this vintage, as American street rods started with vehicles from the same era (Old Model T's, Model A's, 1930s Chevys etc.) as they were cheap and accessible in the 1950s.

However, this Volvo street rod is of course, very unique. Built in 2008, this hot rod Jakob (as the OV4 is known) features custom carbon body and aluminum body panels. The engine is an ethanol-powered Volvo turbo-charged engine with a Volvo 5 speed manual transmission. Suspension is coil-over with gas dampers and the tires are custom-designed Pirellis.

Yes, a lot of work went into this custom street rod. Today's street rods often get the same love, a far cry from the original days of removing fenders and just dropping in a big block V8 and slick tires.

A Show-Winner: Lehman Volvo Employees Love their Volvos

What you are looking at is a stunning restored and modified 1984 Volvo 242 Turbo. This Volvo belongs to Lehman Volvo Technician Shane Feeser....and it's a winner. literally.
This month Shane's 242 won "Best Swedish Car" at the annual Carlisle Import Car Show. That's not a small feat considering Swedish vehicles have the largest turnout at the Carlisle show. In fact, there were over 350 on display (Volvos and Saabs), so winning best of that group is a challenge. There are always a lot of stunning machines on display, but Shane's hard work has paid off.

He bought his 240 in 2006 and has been perfecting it ever since. When he bought it the car was closer to being sent to the scrapyard than it was in any winner's circle.

He replaced a lot of worn out parts, installed a newer turbo-charged engine, replaced the interior, added European spec headlights, coilover suspension, Polaris 17 inch wheels, Group A racing wing, 240 Group A flathood and re-painted the vehicle. There was a lot more work, so that's just the tip of the iceberg. He also replaced the front end with newer body panels, updated the fuel injection and even created a custom exhaust.

Shane is no stranger to classic Volvos...he currently owns a total of 4 Volvos, some of which could be future show winners. Congrats to Shane!

You Can't take Sweden out of the new Volvo XC90

You can't take Volvo out of Sweden and you can't take Sweden out of Volvo. Everywhere you look in the new XC90 you will see Scandinavian details...from the contoured seats, to the intuitive controls, down to the gear selector.

Upon one of the many unique items you will come across in the all-new 2016 Volvo XC90 is a stylized gear selector in top trim. The gear selector was actually designed by Orrefors, one of the world-renown glass makers...from Sweden of course.

Swedish-ness will continue to set Volvo apart from the rest of the world...and that is a very good thing. It means there will be driver and passenger-focused technology (safety), low emissions and exceptional fuel economy (environment) as well as a dedicated team of engineers and assembly teams in Sweden ensuring the Volvo XC90 will continue to define Sweden for years to come (quality).

Your first look at the 2016 Volvo XC90...starting from the inside.

What you are looking at is the interior of the 2016 Volvo XC90, a vehicle that will become the benchmark of luxury SUVs. Yes, that is far from a small claim, but Volvo will aim to repeat history as the original Volvo XC90 became the "must have" luxury SUV when the first generation debuted in 2002.

Press Release from Volvo Cars:
Volvo Car Group (Volvo Cars) has released the first interior images of the all-new Volvo XC90, one of the most anticipated car launches of recent years.
The new interior is the most luxurious to have been designed for a Volvo, taking its inspiration from the country of Volvo’s birth, Sweden, which has a global reputation for integrating the latest technology with design that is clean, beautiful and crafted from the finest materials.
“The most striking feature is a tablet-like touch screen control console, which forms the heart of an all-new in-car control system,” said Thomas Ingenlath, Senior Vice President Design of Volvo Cars.

This system – full details of which will be released at a later date – is virtually button free and represents an entirely new way for drivers to control their car and access a range of Internet-based products and services. It also helps create an interior that is modern, spacious and uncluttered.
The new XC90’s interior combines materials such as soft leather and wood with handcrafted details including a gear lever made of crystal glass from Orrefors, the famous Swedish glass maker, and diamond-cut controls for the start/stop button and volume control.
“These details are designed to become the jewels of the interior. They add a bit of exclusive playfulness rather than pure functionality,” said Robin Page, Volvo Cars’ Interior Design Director.
The all-new XC90 is the first Volvo to use the company’s Scalable Product Architecture (SPA), which creates a far wider range of design options, improves driveability and permits the inclusion of the latest safety features and connected in-car technologies, while at the same time increasing interior space.
“Our new interior architecture is pure and uncluttered, while still radiating the sophisticated confidence and formality that luxury SUV customers expect,” said Peter Mertens, Senior Vice President Research and Development of Volvo Cars.

New seats
Volvo Cars already enjoys a reputation for providing the most comfortable seats in the industry. The new XC90 enhances this reputation by offering innovatively designed seats that also free up interior space for passengers both in the second and third seat rows, helping to make the new XC90 a genuine 7-seater.
"Just like classic Scandinavian chairs, our new seats prove that seats don’t need a lot of thick padding to be comfortable. The full seat core has an ergonomic shape that resembles the human spine. A multitude of adjustment possibilities makes it possible for the individual user to create an ideal seating position,” says Mr Page.
The standard Comfort seats are available with intuitive, smooth power operation, including adjustable side bolsters, seat cushion extension, multi-directional lumbar support and vertical adjustment of the headrests. Three settings can be stored in the memory. Ventilation and massage functions are optional.
The all-new, optional Contour seat has been designed to offer excellent side support all the way from the shoulders to the thighs.

Individual second row seats and more space in the third row
The second row features three individual seats with recline adjustment. The sliding function can be used to create more legroom for the passengers in the third row – or to increase loading space if the third row seats are folded flat. An integrated child booster cushion in the centre seat is optional.

The seats in the third row, which offer class-leading comfort for passengers with a height up to 170 cm, are slightly centred to offer occupants a generous theatre-seat-inspired view forward. Additional space for the feet under the second row seats creates additional comfort and legroom. Special attention has also been given to ensuring easy ingress and egress from the third row and ease of operation, making this the best third row in the segment.
All seven seats feature three-point safety belts with pre-tensioners, and all the seat rows are covered by the improved Inflatable Curtain airbags in a side impact or rollover situation.
The all-new Volvo XC90 includes a number of storage options for the driver and all the passengers. All the seats in the second and third rows can be folded individually, which creates outstanding loading flexibility. The third row seats can also be specified with power operation.
Four-zone climate system
A pleasant and fresh interior climate is a vital part of wellbeing when driving. The all-new Volvo XC90 can be specified with a four-zone climate system with individual settings for the occupants in the front seats and in the second row. A separate air-conditioning unit for the third row is standard or optional depending on the market.
Volvo Cars’ CleanZone air purification system, one of the most efficient on the market, has been further improved by adding a new filter for more efficient capture of small, harmful particles and pollen in the incoming air.

Keep Your Lights Clean....Drive a Volvo.

Remember when Volvos had wipers on their headlights? Every wonder why? The short answer simply is "safety". The longer explanation is that Volvo realizes how important and difficult it is to keep your headlights clean. You might not notice it upon first glance, but it doesn't take much dirt, grime, snow or muck to significantly reduce your headlight's performance.

To this day Volvo includes headlight washers (though the wipers have since vanished) on all of their vehicles. A high pressure spray operates when you turn on your windshield fluid...because, if your windshield is dirty, chances are your headlights are dirty as well.

20 Years Ago: Volvo Proves a Wagon can RACE

The wagon is synonymous with Volvo. You cannot separate the two…and so, it just made sense that Volvo decided to race with one. In 1994 Volvo took the new 850 wagon to the track to race in the British Touring Car Championship. The world took notice, and it has become a legendary vehicle in the history of racing.

It is now 20 years since Volvo marked its return to the racetrack – with a wagon! The venture would lead to many successful years in the BTCC – including an overall victory in 1998. "When I signed up for Volvo and TWR around Christmas 1993, I didn't know about the wagon racing plans," says Rickard Rydell. "If I'd known, I would probably have hesitated. It was lucky I didn't know!"
Volvo's Back on Track project was tangibly launched in April 1994, when two liveried Volvo 850 wagons rolled up to the start line on the Thruxton track in southern England. It was the start of the season of the most prestigious standard car series, the British Touring Car Championship (BTCC).
Alongside Tom Walkinshaw Racing – TWR – Volvo had initiated a major investment in the class, and the idea of using wagons (known as estate cars in Europe) was a great success right from the outset. They attracted a great deal of attention and challenged Volvo's image in a positive way, particularly in the UK. Volvo wanted to demonstrate that it was possible to combine practicality with pleasure!
Behind the wheel of one of the cars was 26-year-old Rickard Rydell who, despite his tender age, had a great deal of experience from karting, Formula 3000 and Formula 3. In the other car was his team-mate Jan Lammers, a 37-year-old Dutchman who had competed in various classes including Formula 1.
"It's hard to believe that 20 years have passed," says Rickard Rydell today. "It doesn't feel like it. But now looking back it is clear that we were focusing on the right class at the right time."
The decision to compete with two wagons was taken several months before the start, but was kept secret until the last moment. When the news was released, many thought it was a joke. A large estate is not an ideal track car – with a lot of weight behind the rear axle and a higher centre of gravity, it is harder to get around the corners than a saloon.
"But the aerodynamics of the estate were slightly better than the sedan," says Rickard Rydell. The deciding factor, however, was that the estate would attract more attention. Indeed it did. 20 years later, people are still talking about that Volvo racing wagon.
The spirit of the Volvo 850 wagon racer lives on in the new 2015 Volvo V60 Sports wagon…from the 240 horsepower/37 mile per gallon T5 to the 325 horsepower all-wheel-Drive T6 R-Design.
