Jason’s Journal: Winter Service Checklist

Image
With winter weather arriving early this year, I would like to take a moment to write about a few tips to improve the safety of your winter weather travel. There are many factors to consider before venturing out into the harsh winter environment. Getting your vehicle checked by a professional prior to doing so is a great start to successful winter travel. Below is a checklist to follow to ensure your vehicle is fully winterized: Examine the condition of all four tires (I recommend switching to snow tires for winter travel. Read why here ). Check and adjust tire pressure (For every 10 degrees the ambient temperature drops you lose about 1 PSI of tire pressure. Read more about tire pressure here ). Check the condition of wiper blades, and replace if needed. Check your vehicle’s antifreeze condition to ensure the coolant is mixed correctly to protect against cold temperatures. Check your vehicle’s windshield washer function and switch to a winterwindshield washer fluid. Using a no

Jennifer Entler is not only a valued Lehman Volvo employee of 19 years, but she is also a Breast Cancer Survivor. As many of us know, October is Breast Cancer Awareness Month, but to Jennifer every month is a chance to spread awareness of this terrible disease that affects so many loved ones. She is a huge advocate for mammograms and believes that early detection saves lives. Spreading the word about the importance of routine mammograms is Jennifer's goal. Read her story below. My Breast Cancer Journey By: Jennifer Entler 1 in 8 women will be diagnosed with Breast Cancer. I AM, simply 1 of 8. In April of 2014, at the age of 40, I was diagnosed with breast cancer after my very first mammogram. After five more mammograms, one biopsy, one MRI, one MRI Assisted Biopsy and an ultra sound, DCIS (Ductal Carcinoma In Situ) was found in my left breast and was removed. I had 8 weeks of radiation after surgery to further insure the cancer would not come back and prescribed Tamoxi

Jason's Journal: Avoid Slipping and Sliding this Winter

Image
With winter weather right around the corner, I would like to discuss a topic extremely important to your safety—winter tires. With many automobiles equipped with All-Wheel Drive, all season tires and other safety systems, you may ask yourself “why should I be concerned with the use of a dedicated winter tire?” All-Wheel Drive will certainly help assist you on snow covered roads when accelerating, but when it comes to braking, steering and maintaining stability, the type of tire makes all the difference. Even the best all season tire is no competition for a dedicated snow tire. The rubber used to make all season tires can harden in cold weather, causing reduced grip. Snow tires are made of a special compound of rubber formulated to provide excellent traction on cold snow covered roads. This type of rubber remains much more pliable in cold weather allowing it to make firm contact with the roadway. Dedicated snow tires have special tread designs made specifically for snow and ice.

Jason’s Journal: Reasons Why Brake Fluid Flushes are Important

Jason’s Journal: Reasons Why Brake Fluid Flushes are Important By: Jason McKinsey, Service Manager Preventive maintenance can make a big difference in your vehicle’s cost of ownership over the years. We all know oil changes are essential, but there are other fluid changes that can help lower your repair cost down the road, such as brake fluid changes. Brake fluid is a hydraulic fluid used to create pressure within the braking system by the force you apply to the brake pedal. That pressure causes the brake caliper to compress the brake pads onto the brake rotor surface. The friction from the brake pads being compressed onto a spinning brake rotor creates heat. The heat tha

These systems include: Antilock Brakes  Automatic Braking  City Safety  Collision warning with auto brake  Pedestrian detection  All of these systems work in conjunction with the braking system to increase safety for the driver, passenger

Looking for more information on a particular Volvo service topic? Submit your topic suggestion to Jason at jason@lehmanvolvocarsyork.com . Jason's Journal: Light Your Way to Safety By: Jason McKinsey Service Manager As your Volvo matures, you may notice a discoloration, or yellowing, of the headlight lens, which may degrade the appearance of your Volvo. But, did you know that this headlight discoloration can also be a safety hazard? The discoloration reduces the light output of the headlight, therefore causing a reduction in your ability to see during night driving. Not only will this reduce the distance you are able to see while driving, it will also reduce the overall clarity of the illuminated area. Many years ago, automotive headlight lenses were made of glass. While the glass never became discolored, the lenses were easil

Welcoming Doug Frantz to the Lehman Family

Image
With the growth of Volvo new car sales over the last year, Lehman Volvo Cars expanded its team to include Sales Consultant, Doug Frantz. Doug’s experience and professionalism makes him an excellent addition to the Lehman Volvo Cars team. Read Doug’s bio below. Meet Doug: Doug Frantz is no stranger to the automotive world. Describing himself as an “old soul,” Doug explains his passion for antique cars. Volunteering at AACA competitions as a judge, Doug sees his fair share of vintage cars. “Every antique car has a story, and that’s what I love,” he states. History had always been Doug’s favorite subject growing up, and it still continues to influence him today. Combining his friendly personality and his passion of cars, it was an obvious choice for Doug to make a career out of automotive sales. But before Doug became an automotive sales consultant for a local dealer, he served in the U.S. Army for 8 years as an Analyst and Instructor for the Pennsylvania and Georgia Nati

Jason's Journal: Spring Cleaning

Jason's Journal: Spring Cleaning By: Jason McKinsey, Service Manager Purchasing a new vehicle is a major investment. Keeping up with routine maintenance and repair needs is extremely important, however there are also other ways to help protect that investment. Over time the environment can cause damaging effects on your Volvo. Your Volvo is exposed to harsh UV rays, rain, snow, chemicals from roadway salt treatments and many other factors that can degrade your Volvo’s appearance. One way to help combat these unavoidable factors, is to have your Volvo routinely detailed. A “detail” is a thorough vehicle cleaning and restoration performed by a professional wh

The Volvos with the Little Blue Badge

Image
The Volvos with the Little Blue Badge By: Dan Lehr, Pre-Owned Sales Manager The little blue badge on certain Volvos…chances are you have seen them, or at least heard the name “Polestar” before. But what does it mean? Well, it is Volvo-speak for performance and a great way to add more spark to your drive. Let’s flash back to the 1990s, when things were a little boxier in the world of Volvo. The revolutionary Volvo 850 was just launched with critical acclaim, and Volvo decided to take it racing. In both sedan and wagon form, the Volvo 850 demonstrated killer instincts on the track, with the team lead by what was to be called Polestar. Polestar would then go on to campaign S40s, C30s and more recently S60s in both the Swedish Touring car racing series and European Touring car series. The rest is history as they say. Since then, Polestar has been Volvo’s racing partner and performance developer for not only racing endeavors, but also the cars you can buy right from the dealership. I

Pothole Blues By Jason McKinsey, Service Manager No driver looks forward to the abundance of potholes during this time of year. Sometimes it seems when one pothole is repaired, two more pop up in its place! As you can imagine, potholes take a toll on your Volvo. Wheel alignment is one of the most common things affected by potholes and other road hazards. Wheel alignment is the adjustment of steering and suspension components that affect how the tires make contact with the surface of the road. There are several angles that can be adjusted to change the wheel alignment, including the most common: Caster, Camber and Toe. But, h

An unclean or obscured windshield is a hazard to you, your Volvo, and other drivers. According to Volvo Cars, approximately 20% of all road accidents are related to lack of visibility. We depend on wipers to remove rain, snow and dirt in all degrees of weather and at various speeds.  Understanding the importance of wiper blades, Volvo Cars tests its wiper blades in several different ways before the wipers are approved

New “Average” Versus Volvo Certified Pre-Owned

Image
New “Average” Versus Volvo Certified Pre-Owned By: Dan Lehr, Pre-Owned Sales Manager The average new car price is now over $33,500. No matter how you look at it, that is not a small amount of money. There are a lot of average new vehicles out there that provide reliable transportation from Point A-to-Point B. Not all of them are as comfortable, safe or enjoyable as a Volvo, which begs the question…why spend over $30,000 on an average new vehicle when you could get into a Certified Pre-Owned Volvo for the same amount or even less? Let’s see how the average new car stacks up against a Certified Pre-Owned Volvo. Using a new 2018 Honda Accord, we will see how the average new car compares to a Certified Pre-Owned Volvo S60. To be fair, we will equip our examples as closely as possible. With the level of luxury content you receive on the Volvo S60, we will have to upgrade to a Honda Accord EXL with Navigation (Starting at $29,970 before destination). Most of the S60s in invento

How to Properly Warm your Engine in Cold Temperatures By: Jason McKinsey During these cold winter months, I often see news reports on whether or not you should allow your vehicle’s engine to warm up at idle. This highly debated topic has people on both sides. Some say warming a vehicle at idle will damage the engine, while others express engine damage is inevitable when a vehicle is not warmed at idle. So, which of these statements is correct? Modern fuel injected engines do not need to be warmed at idle to function properly. The fuel injection computer will adjust the fuel mixture for the current temperature. This allows the engine to operate normally witho

Why Can’t I Find the Perfect 15-Year Old Volvo Wagon?

Image
Why Can’t I Find the Perfect 15-Year Old Volvo Wagon ? By Dan Lehr, Pre-Owned Sales Manager Having worked for Lehman Motors for over a decade, there are certain requests that I hear quite often. One of them goes like this: “I have a new driver in the family and we are on the search for the perfect 15-year old Volvo wagon.” Of course it makes all the sense in the world. The car will be affordable, it will last, and above all—it will be a safe vehicle for a young driver. 15-year old Volvo wagons exist and are plentiful on the road. They were popular when new, and Lehman Volvo Cars services many of them to this day. You might assume we would have loyal customers trading them in on a newer Volvo wagon (or crossover) all the time, right? Well, not exactly. When the decision comes to replace the old Volvo wagon, it is almost never traded in. A Volvo wagon is a generational vehicle. They are purchased new, driven many miles, and taken on many trips. When the time comes, they are
