What to Look Forward to in the New Year

2013 was a busy year for Volvo, with new technology, design changes and investment in future vehicles. However, 2014 will be even bigger for more than a few reasons. Here is a rundown of some of the things you will want to check out in the New Year...

1. The Return of the wagon. Yes, Volvo is bringing the wagon back to the US. Not just any wagon, but the new 2015 Volvo V60. It will come in a variety of powertrains and packages. We cannot say enough good things about this vehicle. Starting at $35,300 (plus destination), the V60 is truly in a class of its own when it comes to safety, versatility, driving dynamics and fuel efficiency.

2. The all-new Volvo Drive-E engine range. A major investment, the new Volvo Drive-E engines will be available in most of the Volvo line-up including the S60, V60, S80, XC60 and XC70. With start-stop technology, amazing fuel economy AND performance (240 horsepower in T5 trim, 300+ horsepower in T6 trim), the Drive-E engine range will impress in all areas.

3. 8 Speed Automatic Transmissions. Yes, you read that right...a new 8 speed transmission. Connected to Volvos with the Drive-E engine, the new automatic transmission will provide smooth shifting and help deliver even greater fuel efficiency. In addition, performance will also be increased with faster shifting.

4. The Fastest Volvos Ever Produced. Volvos are safe, yes. But Volvos are also exciting. That will be the emphasis of the all-new Volvo S60 Polestar and Volvo V60 Polestar. Featuring a long list of performance items (Brembo brakes, unique suspension, aerodynamic styling, special wheels, etc.) the Polestar Volvos will produce 350 horsepower and be able to reach 60 miles an hour in under 5 seconds.

5. Turbo charger + Super Charger. The all-new Volvo T6 engine not only provides over 300 horsepower, but it also features turbo power with a super charger. This unique design will ensure power in the lower end (with the turbo charger) and power in the higher end (with the super charger), giving you a seamless band of power with none of the drawbacks.

There are other exciting changes and announcement for 2014, but we cannot share them all yet. Stay tuned with Lehman Volvo for all the latest news. Surprise! The gift of Safety

Yes, people do get surprised with new vehicles for Christmas. In fact,  Lehman Volvo usually has at least one surprise vehicle purchase each year (sometimes more).

We have had clients surprise their friends, family members or significant others with a new or pre-owned Volvo from Lehman Volvo. In fact, it just happened to Angela Chapman, whose sister surprised her with a very nice 8,500 mile Certified Pre-Owned Volvo S40.

As Angela walked into the showroom and saw the Volvo S40 sitting there with a note on the windshield she said: “Oh, isn’t that nice! Someone is getting a Volvo for Christmas!” Little did she know, it was hers! Here’s to many happy miles from everyone at Lehman Volvo.

How to put 4,542 miles on your new Volvo before you take it home

As a follow-up to our last post, we thought we would share exactly how the Andersons put 4,542 miles on their new 2014 Volvo S60 in Europe. After flying to Sweden on Volvo's dime (part of the benefit of ordering your new Volvo through Overseas Delivery) the Andersons picked up their Volvo at the factory delivery center, and took a little excursion...and by little we mean big:

St. Pair Sur Mer (Normandy)
St. Malo

After their trip, the Andersons gave their newly broken-in Volvo back to the factory where it was shipped to Lehman Motors Volvo before they took final delivery. Quite an adventure for a new car, and a great story. Order your next Volvo through Lehman Volvo and tell them you want your new Volvo through Overseas Delivery. You can drive your new Volvo in Europe for up to 2 weeks with insuraunce and registration covered by Volvo, or you can just check the car out and let Volvo ship it to our dealership with a lot less miles than the Andersons.

The 4,542 Mile New Car

Pictured above are the Andersons, who just took delivery of their new 2014 Volvo S60 T5 all-wheel-drive. And all four wheels drove 4,542 miles before they took delivery of their new car at Lehman Volvo. The Andersons took advantage of Volvo’s Overseas Delivery program through Lehman Volvo.

If you aren’t familiar with the program, Volvo Overseas Delivery gives you a chance to order your Volvo from us and fly to Sweden to pick it up directly from the factory. The roundtrip airfare comes at no charge and you get some very cool VIP perks along the way. Another benefit of the program is the opportunity to drive your new Volvo in Europe before it gets shipped to our dealership for final delivery. Volvo will cover 14 days of European registration and insurance. The red tourist license plates are yours to keep! With that in mind, the Andersons made the most out of the opportunity!

After picking up their car in Gothenburg, Sweden, they traveled to Stockholm, then to Malmo, then on to Copenhagen, Denmark. From there they travelled to multiple cities in Germany and France.  In total, nearly 4,600 miles were completed.  This is certainly a record for a Lehman Volvo customer, and one of the most well-travelled Overseas Delivery cars Volvo has seen as well.

Volvo Versus Deer: A Lesson in Safety

Lehman Volvo client Autumn Walden recently found out why we say “Volvo for life”. Travelling on the turnpike near Pittsburgh in her recently purchased Volvo C70 she ran into a problem that is prevalent this time of year.

That problem was a deer. Thankfully, Volvo knows how destructive large animals can be, as there are a lot of deer (and moose) in Sweden. As a result, they engineer all of their vehicles to withstand large animal encounters. And, as the photos show, the results are impressive. Autumn and her passenger escaped unharmed after the head to head encounter at 70 miles an hour.

Needless to say, Autumn has since replaced her Volvo C70 with a new one. Another Lehman Volvo customer for life!

How Reliable is a Volvo? Ask Consumer Reports

It's a question we sometimes hear from new or potential Volvo owners...."are these cars reliable?" Well, you could ask our longtime service customer Selden Cooper, who has put over 1 million miles on his 1987 Volvo 240, or you could simply take a look at the latest reliability report from Consumer Reports (more of a household name, we admit).

Volvo ranks in the top 10 auto makes, ahead of other household names like Honda, Subaru, Ford, Nissan, Hyundai...and a lot of others. This survey is based off of a list of 1.1 million vehicles owned by real people, so it's a lot more than hearsay.

But there's more to owning a vehicle than reliability....cost of ownership is also another important factor. It's in this area too that Volvo shines, as each new Volvo comes standard with 3 years of complimentary factory scheduled maintenance. In addition, Volvo service intervals are every 10,000 miles, which means fewer trips to the dealership for maintenance.

Here is your Volvo Safety...

What you see above is the result of an accident between a tractor trailer, a Volvo XC60...and another tractor trailer. If you think the end result is devastating, just be aware...the driver and passenger of the Volvo XC60 walked away from this accident with only minor injuries.

This accident happened in Brussels a couple of days ago, here is some of the report from their newspaper:

A car containing a mother and daughter crashed into the back of a truck. The vehicle disappeared completely under the rear end of the heavy truck. To make matters worse, a heavy truck crashed into the Volvo XC60 from behind.
The result was a lot of scrap. The emergency services had to rescue the two women from the car, who were trapped for more than one hour. The fire brigade had to cut off the roof of the vehicle before being able to set them free.
The two ladies must have had a guardian angel as they got off with only minor injuries. They were taken to the hospital for a routine check up

So why do we believe so strongly in Volvo? The picture above says it all.

A Little Walk for a Big Cause

It was overcast, a little cool, and there was a slight breeze...but everyone who took part in the Harrisburg Light the Night Walk didn't seem to mind. The annual Leukemia and Lymphoma Society Light the Night Walk raises thousands of dollars to help those with blood cancers.

In an amazing effort this year, Team Lehman Motors raised over $15,000! Our team worked hard to get every dollar, and they were happy and proud to take part in the Walk on City Island in Harrisburg. There were fireworks, local celebrities and even a band!  A big thanks to everyone who helped contribute this year.

The Lehman Volvo York team is walking this weekend in York, so there is still time for you to make a contribution! Call Lehman Volvo at 717-755-7676 or e-mail chris@lehmanvolvoyork.com to show your support.

Changing the Shape of Electric Power

Leave it to Volvo to take a current technology and revolutionize it. They have done it in the past (and currently) with safety, design and environmental care. Now they have taken the battery and changed that as well.

Press Release

Volvo Car Group has developed a revolutionary concept for lightweight structural energy storage components that could improve the energy usage of future electrified vehicles. The material, consisting of carbon fibres, nano structured batteries and super capacitors, offers lighter energy storage that requires less space in the car, cost effective structure options and is eco-friendly.

The project, funded as part of a European Union research project, included Imperial College London as the academic lead partner along with eight other major participants. Volvo was the only car manufacturer in the project. The project team identified a feasible solution to the heavy weight, large size and high costs associated with the batteries seen in hybrids and electric cars today, whilst maintaining the efficient capacity of power and performance. The research project took place over 3.5 years and is now realised in the form of car panels within a Volvo S80 experimental car.

The breakthrough

The answer was found in the combination of carbon fibres and a polymer resin, creating a very advanced nanomaterial, and structural super capacitors. The reinforced carbon fibres sandwich the new battery and are moulded and formed to fit around the car’s frame, such as the door panels, the boot lid and wheel bowl, substantially saving on space. The carbon fibre laminate is first layered, shaped and then cured in an oven to set and harden. The super capacitors are integrated within the component skin. This material can then be used around the vehicle, replacing existing components, to store and charge energy.

The material is recharged and energised by the use of brake energy regeneration in the car or by plugging into a mains electrical grid. It then transfers the energy to the electric motor which is discharged as it is used around the car.

The breakthrough showed that this material not only charges and stores faster than conventional batteries can, but that it is also strong and pliant.

The results so far

Today, Volvo Car Group has evaluated the technology by creating two components for testing and development. These are a boot lid and a plenum cover, tested within the Volvo S80.

The boot lid is a functioning electrically powered storage component and has the potential to replace the standard batteries seen in today’s cars. It is lighter than a standard boot lid, saving on both volume and weight.

The new plenum demonstrates that it can also replace both the rally bar, a strong structural piece that stabilises the car in the front, and the start-stop battery. This saves more than 50% in weight and is powerful enough to supply energy to the car’s 12 Volt system

It is believed that the complete substitution of an electric car’s existing components with the new material could cut the overall weight by more than 15%. This is not only cost effective but would also have improvements to the impact on the environment.

Volvo Car Group lead the way

Electrified cars play an important role in Volvo Car Group’s future product portfolio and the company will continue to find and develop innovative and advanced technical solutions for the cars of tomorrow.

Lehman Motors Volvo has been serving the Harrisburg area for over 30 years, and nearly half of that time has now been at their current location on the Carlisle Pike in Mechanicsburg. When the Carlisle Pike location opened in 1998, the design and layout was very modern...and pretty much still is today.

Owner Ken Lehman had some input into how the showroom was designed, specifically the cobblestone-esque pathways on which the display vehicles sit. This was his way of incorporating a European feel to the showroom.

15 years later the facility is still a very nice place to do business, with an open feeling (there is a lot of glass) and a great location. Along the way we have added wireless internet and ultra efficient lot lighting, but the dealership looks largely like it did in 1998, and that's a good thing!

A New Safety Test: Volvo Aces It

It seems that with every new type of crash test out there, there is always ONE brand that passes with flying colors. From the frontal offset crash test, to the roof structure crash test...to the just-announced "crash prevention systems" test, conducted by the IIHS, Volvo just keeps winning.

So what is a "crash prevention system" test? It measures how well a vehicle AVOIDS a crash in the first place. Its no surprise (to us) that the Volvo S60 and Volvo XC60 got the top marks of Superior in this test as they both come standard with City Safety Autobrake technology!

Volvo press release below:

Volvo S60 and XC60 get ‘superior’ rating in new test of front crash prevention systems
Volvo Car Group’s position at the pinnacle of car safety is again highlighted with the U.S. Insurance Institute for Highway Safety (IIHS) introducing a new test programme that rates the performance of front crash prevention systems. Both the Volvo S60 and XC60 get the highest possible rating ‘Superior’ – and Volvo Cars’ City Safety is the only standard fitment low-speed crash prevention system in the test, which included 74 vehicles.
“We welcome that the major rating institutes now begin to integrate collision avoiding technologies in their test programmes. This gives consumers a better insight into the advantages of auto brake systems. It will also drive implementation of these technologies through the vehicle fleet,” says Thomas Broberg, Senior Safety Advisor at Volvo Car Group.

The IIHS’ new crash prevention evaluation will be incorporated into the institute’s 2014 Top Safety Pick+ rating. It includes two tests addressing front-to-rear crashes, one at 20 km/h (12 mph) and the other at 40 km/h (25 mph). An additional point is given to vehicles with Forward Collision Warning.
The Volvo S60 and XC60 equipped with City Safety and Collision Warning with Full Auto Brake and Pedestrian Detection are among seven models that get a ‘Superior’ rating in the new test.
City Safety standard in all Volvo models
The low-speed City Safety system is standard in all new Volvo models on all markets. Most Volvo models are also available with state-of-the-art technologies that detect, warn and brake automatically for rear end of vehicles as well as moving pedestrians and cyclists in higher speeds.

“The IIHS test focuses on two situations, both with the car approaching a stationary vehicle mock-up. However, it should be emphasised that Volvo Cars’ systems cover a much broader scope of real-life scenarios, including vehicles moving in the same direction, pedestrians and cyclists,” says Thomas Broberg.
So far, Volvo Cars has sold more than one million cars equipped with systems for automatic braking – and the company will continue this pioneering work in the near future by making detection systems work also in darkness for pedestrians and by introducing collision mitigation for animals.
Auto brake results in fewer accidents
The benefits of the groundbreaking City Safety technology has been documented in an earlier IIHS/HLDI (Highway Loss Data Institute) report stating a reduction of the collision claim frequency with up to 20 per cent. Data from Swedish insurer If show similar figures with frontal collisions in car following situations being reduced with 23 per cent.
The IIHS study of insurance claims involving a Volvo XC60 shows that City Safety reduces the costs for bodily injury liability with 33 per cent – while property damage liability was lowered by 15 per cent.
“Over the years, the risk of being injured in a Volvo has been reduced continuously and substantially. By introducing new preventive and protective systems, we keep moving towards our aim that by 2020 no one should be injured or killed in a new Volvo. Our long-term vision is that cars should not crash,” says Thomas Broberg.

The Future Arrived 30 Years Ago

Sometimes an idea is so good that it lives on long after its creation. That is the case with the Volvo LCP2000 Concept Car, which debuted 30 years ago. This concept showed a great way to achieve excellent fuel economy through 4 cylinder engines with lightweight components.

Weighing in at just 1,543 pounds the LCP2000 (which stands for Light Component Project) returned 60 miles per gallon and featured aluminum and carbon fiber construction. The LCP2000 also featured alternative fuel technolgoy. Pretty advanced ideas for the year 1983.

Flash forward to today and Volvo is combinging weight reduction and 4 cylinder engine technology again with their all new DriveE engine range, which will debut in January with the all-new 2015 Volvo V60. The DrivE engines are both light weight and economical. But in addition, the new engines are also very powerful, with 240 horsepower (a bit more than the 90 horsepower offered in the LCP2000). High fuel economy, weight reduction AND performance oriented power. Now that's an idea worth developing....

How do I get one of those red plates?!

It's a question we get every now and then. "How do I get one of those red plates?"...those red plates you see on various Volvos in Central Pennsylvania are actually Swedish Tourist plates. Simply the Best Service Department!

As the title implies, our service department has just received one of the most prestigious awards ever given (in Central Pennsylvania). The readers of Harrisburg Magazine have casted their vote, and when the dust settled, Lehman Volvo came out as the winner of "Simply the Best: Auto Service Department". It's quite an accomplishment when you consider just how many auto dealerships there are in the area.
We have a very loyal service base (how about a customer with a 1 million mile vehicle that still services with us?), so we can't say the award is a total surprise to us. Whether someone is servicing their one-year old Volvo with us, or their 40 year old Volvo with us, our team is dedicated to keeping our customers happy. The latest award is just one more piece of evidence that we are doing our job.

Congrats guys, AND thanks to our customers!

More on the Future of Volvo Engines...

In the distant, dark past there was a time when a 4 cylinder engine provided excellent fuel economy and not much else. In 1981, Volvo changed all of that with the introduction of the turbo-charged 4 cylinder. Flash forward over 30 years later and the modern 4 cylinder engine has come a long way.

Even better, the FUTURE 4 cylinder engine will completely remove any thinking that you need 6 or more cylinders. Case in point: Volvo's all-new DrivE T6 engine. It will be super-charged as well as turbo-charged and will deliver over 300 horsepower...all from a 4 cylinder. In addition, the fuel economy will be equally as impressive.

While Volvo hasn't had a 4 cylinder engine in America for over years, they still make them in other markets and when you add up the numbers, Volvo has sold more 4 cylinder cars than any other variant in their history, so it's safe to say, they know a thing or two about making an impressive 4 cylinder vehicle.

Volvo safety: Built into every non-Volvo on the road

If there is one story that shows Volvo is the pioneering force in automotive safety, it’s the story of the 3 point seat belt.

Nils Bohlin, an engineer at Volvo, invented the three-point seat belt in 1959. The 1950s were a time when pilots and racing drivers wore harnesses, but seatbelts – where they were fitted in cars – took the form of a rudimentary two-point waist restraint. In crashes, sometimes these did more harm than good.
The reason the three-point seatbelt is so widely adopted is actually because Volvo opened up the patent so that any car manufacturer could use it in their design. They decided that the invention was so significant, it had more value as a free life saving tool than something to profit from.

Volvo’s managing director Alan Dessell is quoted as saying: “The decision to release the three-point seat belt patent was visionary and in line with Volvo’s guiding principle of safety.”
The man who saved a million lives

Nils Bohlin, inventor of the three-point seatbelt, received a gold medal from the Royal Swedish Academy of Engineering Science in 1995 and, in 1999, was inducted into the Automotive Hall of Fame.

Bohlin, a former aviation engineer at Saab who worked on ejector seats, knew an effective belt must absorb force across the body yet be so easy to use even a child could buckle up. His ingenious solution took the form of a combined lap belt with a diagonal belt across the chest. He anchored the straps low beside the seat so the geometry of the belts formed a “V” with the point directed at the floor. That design meant the belt would remain in place and not shift under a load.
According to the latest figures released as part of celebrations surrounding the 50th anniversary of the invention of the three-point seatbelt, it has saved a million lives across the world and prevented even more serious injuries. Reducing your chance of injury or death by at least 50 percent in the event of a collision, it remains the most successful contribution to safety in the history of motoring.

The Future Starts With 4

There was a time when Volvo's line-up consisted of mostly 4 cylinder cars. From naturally aspirated, to turbo-charged 4 cylinder engines, Volvo has sold over 5 million 4 cylinder cars, so they know a little bit about them.

And when looking to the future, Volvo decided to go back to what they knew so well. 4 cylinder engines + turbocharging = fun AND frugal. As Volvo puts it "it's time to stop counting cylinders". Starting with the 2015 model year vehicles, Volvo is unveiling a new generation of 4 cylinder vehicles under the name VEA (Volvo engine architecture) that will provide 6 cylinder power with near-hybrid like fuel economy. How's that for improvement?!

These new 4 cylinder engines will debut in January and will eventually make their way across the entire Volvo line-up. The future is exciting indeed...and it starts with 4 (cylinders).

We Believe in What We Sell

What you're looking at is a smashed Volvo 760 that saved the life of our Sales Manager Brad Smith long before he began working for Lehman Volvo in York. He was still in college when a drunk driver swerved into the opposite lane of traffic, resulting in a direct head-on crash with Brad's trusty Volvo.

It was a high speed impact that left a twisted wreckage...but this Volvo did its job, sacrificing itself with various crumple zones and high strength steel. Brad's road to recovery took a long time, but he is a firm believer in the brand to this day.

A Decade and a Half of Elegance and Open Air Fun

2013 marks a bittersweet era for fans of the Volvo C70. This is the last year for the hard-top convertible and the end of a journey that began in 1998. It was that year that the sleek and sexy first generation Volvo C70 hit the road. Much like its predecessor, the P1800, the C70 had the unique job of changing perceptions of what a Volvo could be.

The C70 was unveiled first as an elegant coupe, and later as on open-air convertible. The convertible proved to be the more popular variant, as it carried on several years after the coupe ended production.

In 2006, the second generation C70 landed and it was an instant hit. Combining the elegant looks of a coupe and the function of a convertible, it was the first four seat 3 piece hardtop convertible on the market. With room for 4 and an impressive list of safety features (one of the only convertibles ever to be named a Top Safety Pick by the IIHS), it also carried on the practical side of Volvo...but in a fun to drive convertible. It was the best of both worlds.

It has been a successful run, but all good things must come to an end. Perhaps there will be another Volvo convertible in the future, but only time will tell. Until then, claim your future collectible Volvo C70 during the Summer Sales event at Lehman Volvo.
