Best time to buy a new Volvo? Looks like now...

If you believe the news and historical data than you would also believe that now...and tomorrow...are the best time to buy a new car (and of course, why would you choose anything other than a Volvo ;). In fact, when you look at the historical data you will find that 7 of the 10 best days to buy a car fall in the month of December.
The end of the year has typically been a good time to buy as companies want that last minute competitive push before the new year starts. But this year, there are also other factors...some of them are weather related, due to the effects of vehicles that were lost during Hurricane Sandy.
On a brighter note, we have the strongest lease offers we've had in years this month, with $0 due at signing leases on every new Volvo. And this month you have your last chance to take advantage of Safe and Secure Coverage if you purchase a new Volvo. That adds up to 5 years of warranty coverage, 5 years of no-charge maintenance and 5 years of no charge wear and tear coverage...even down to your wiper blades! For those who own a Volvo there is also a $1,000 loyalty incentive. So to your new Volvo from Lehman Volvo and do it today! (or tomorrow).

For those in Need: Lehman Volvo Delivers

What you see here is Santa's sleigh...(also known as a Volvo XC90) loaded with gifts provided by Lehman Volvo customers and employees. This month we collected items for the YWCA's Children List for Santa, and happily, every single item on the list was collected! We cannot stress enough how grateful we are for the generosity of our customers and our employees. There will be some extra smiles and comfort this Holiday season.

Lehman Volvo has partnered with the YWCA for years in giving to this very important cause. A single gift can go a long way, and we are more than happy to help. So thanks again, and here's to great Holiday season for everyone. Cheers.

The best kind of gift you can get.

Yes, its the time of year when there are TONS of Holiday sales commercials from all kinds of car companies. From those with bows, to those with Santa, and those with disgruntled family members not getting a shiny new car. The message is clear: a shiny new car will make you happy...and make your neighbors envious.
But the thing is, we all know what is more important than's protecting the gifts you already have. This is where Volvo has a clear advantage, with the 2013 Volvo S60...the only European sport sedan with a Top Safety pick in offset crash testing by the IIHS. We also have the 2013 7 passenger Volvo XC90 which was first SUV ever to receive a Top Safety pick by the IIHS...oh, and its been named a top pick every year since they've tested it. And of course, the Top Safety pick C30, XC60 and S80. So while shiny and new is nice, Shiny, new and safe is where it's at.

From Production to Delivery: The First C30 Polestar Limited Edition

Every once in a while Volvo brings us a special limited model, and that is certainly the case with the Volvo C30 Polestar Limited Edition. 250 horsepower, unique wheels, Rebel-Blue paint and numbered badges...all are standard with this C30, and there are only 250 produced.

In September, our Mechanicsburg Volvo dealership got an order for a C30 Polestar Limited Edition, and the car that was ordered happened to be the FIRST one produced. Watch the story here:

"No sir, my Brakelight is not out...but thanks for asking!"

Rain, Snow, and Fog...all conditions in which you might see a Volvo with what looks like one brake light on. But in most of those scenarios, that isn't the case. For decades Volvo has been equipping their vehicles with Rear Foglights...a light brighter than your tail lights to be used in hazardous driving conditions with low fog (hence the name!). What these lights do is help OTHER drivers see you, improving safety for both you and drivers behind you.

I was reminded a few weeks ago that not everyone who owns a Volvo knows about their rear foglight. In fact, while I was pulling into my driveway, a neighbor who owns an older S70 stopped to tell me my brake light was out. I informed him what it was, and that his car had one as well! Just a small part of Volvo's commitment to safety.

So if you own a Volvo and you don't know where your switch is...just look for the amber fog light symbol...the one pointing the opposite direction of your front fog lights.

    James Bond and....Volvo?

James Bond celebrates 50 years of movie action this year with the latest movie "Skyfall". Of course, most people associate Bond with a silver Aston Martin, but there are a couple of Volvo connections with the history of 007.
The most recent connection was in the 2008 Bond film, "Quantum of Solace", in which Daniel Craig can be seen driving a Volvo S40 R-Design during a scene in Austria. It's a brief appearance, but a Volvo in a Bond film nonetheless.

Another connection is with Roger Moore, who has appeared as James Bond more than any other actor in the role. Prior to taking the role in 1972, Moore had appeared in the television series "The Saint". In that show, Moore's character drove a stunning Volvo P1800 coupe. So there you have it, 007 and Volvo share a connection...or a bond, if you will.

    Of Volvos and Vampires...

Halloween...the perfect time to be in a dark and mysterious ride. Of course, with the Twilight movie series, the main character, Edward (the vampire!) knows this just as well as anyone else. That's why he has chosen a Volvo in each one of his outings.

From the snappy C30 hatchback, to the sleek XC60 crossover, and lately...the 325 horsepower S60 R-Design. Volvo has always been an "out of the box" choice for those looking for a sporty car that no-one else has. A great break from the norm, Volvo has been surprising enthusiasts for decades. With over 30 years of turbocharging technology there have been more than a handful of people that are shocked to learn a Volvo can perform so well.

    Happy Halloween from Lehman Volvo!

    Volvo All-Wheel-Drive and Rain

OK, so the picture above is an extreme example...but all-wheel-drive is just as good in the wet as it is in the snow. In our region there are 4 seasons (most of the time), and with the recent storm experienced on the east coast, there was plenty of rainy weather to drive through.
Volvo's all-wheel-drive system detects when there is slippage and sends powers only to the wheels that need them (which helps with fuel economy as well). The all-wheel-drive system also helps with other slippery situations like wet leaves.
However, there is one place you should never take your vehicle...all-wheel-drive or otherwise...and that is through standing water. Please stay safe!

    Our Million Mile Celebrity

If you follow our blog, then you already know about Selden Cooper, our loyal customer who has logged 1 million miles on his 1987 Volvo 240DL. Well it turns out a lot of news agencies took notice as well.

Selden's story has been re-printed from Volvo on their own blog (as well as their Facebook page, pictured above), and with their own Press Release...but it doesn't stop there. The million mile 240 also has appeared in Motor Authority, the New York Daily News and in the November issue of Harrisburg Magazine.

And now, Selden is an international star with his story being printed in Sweden! Of course the coverage is well-deserved as Volvo is now the only brand with more than 1 million-miler (Irv Gordon completed the 1 million mark over a decade ago and is nearing 3 million miles). Once again, we are very proud of Selden Cooper and his million mile ride. It is still running strong and perhaps we will have a two million mile 240 story 25 years from now...

What does it take to reach 1 million miles?

Let's say you bought a new Volvo 240 in 1986, like Selden Cooper did from Lehman Motors Volvo. Now let's say that unlike the majority of Americans you hold on to your trusty 240 for over 26 years...and in that time you drive nearly 1 million miles. How do you preserve your 240 to reach that very big milestone?

The key to automotive longevity is proper maintenance. So, in one million miles you will have gone through:

    200 Oil Changes
    50 Transmission fluid changes
    33 Engine Air Filters
    33 Sets of Spark Plugs
    20 Timing Belts

And various sets of tires, wiper blades, brake pads, rotors, and bulbs. You might need a transmission service or two, but the beauty of Volvo engineering is that these cars are built to long as you take car of your Volvo, it will take care of you. This is something Selden Cooper has experienced over the years, and he will realize mile number 1,000,000 very soon.

Help us celebrate Selden Cooper's 1 millionth mile this weekend at Lehman Volvo in Mechanicsburg

Closing in on 1 Million Miles

What you see here is a Volvo 240 unlike any other Volvo 240 on the road...that's because this one has covered more miles than it would take for you to reach the moon and back...twice. This Volvo 240 belongs to Selden Cooper, who purchased it new from Lehman Volvo in 1986. Since then he has put on 999,100 miles and will reach that 1 million mile mark on Saturday, September 22nd, nearly 26 years since he bought the car.

"This is only the second Volvo I've owned!" states Selden, who had no intention on racking up this many miles when he took delivery of his car. At some point it became a mission to reach that 1 million miles. He is not alone however. Irv Gordon, who owns a classic 1966 Volvo P1800 coupe, reached the 1 million mark over a decade ago. In fact, he will reach 3 million miles this time next year. In the meantime, Irv and Seldon will be meeting up at Volvo Cars North America's open house at the end of this month. Between the two of them they have plenty of road stories to share.

Seldon's 1 millionth mile journey will happen at Lehman Volvo on the Carlisle Pike, Saturday morning. Be there to cheer on this momentous occasion!

Safe doesnt "just happen": New S60 Ahead of the class

A lot of car companies test their vehicle safety to "star" ratings or standards, and not to real-world conditions. Volvo thinks differently though, and engineers their cars differently as a result. Case in point...the 2012 Volvo S60 is ahead of the competition in the new IIHS offset-crash test, which mimics an accident that is much closer to a real world scenario.

The IIHS released its findings Tuesday and said that only three of 11 midsize luxury and near-luxury cars earned good or acceptable ratings in the new overlap frontal crash test.
Overlap crashes are responsible for a quarter of all fatal front-end collisions, and as the new crash test found, most cars - domestic and foreign - are unprepared to keep drivers safe in one of these crashes.

"Nearly every new car performs well in other frontal crash tests conducted by the Institute and the federal government, but we still see more than 10,000 deaths in frontal crashes each year," Institute President Adrian Lund said in a news release. "Small overlap crashes are a major source of these fatalities."

The key to protection in any crash is a strong safety cage that resists deformation to maintain survival space for occupants.

"It's packaging 101. If you ship a fragile item in a strong box, it's more likely to arrive at its destination without breaking. In crashes, people are less vulnerable to injury if the occupant compartment remains intact," said Lund.

Reducing Highway Traffic Collisions by 42%

It's a pretty bold claim...but one that can be backed up by real life research. From Autotalk:

Recently, a research project by the name European Field Operational Test (EuroFOT) was put together to explore some of the most innovative vehicle active safety systems. With some help from Volvo and 27 other organizations, real world tests were conducted across an 18 month time span to find out just how helpful systems such as adaptive cruise control really are. Using 100 V70 and XC70 models, 263 drivers returned 30 terra bytes of data so that five major safety features could be analyzed. With the study finalized, the results have further proved Volvo knows its way around vehicle safety.

“The analyses show that our world-leading focus on new safety and support technologies delivers results in everyday traffic conditions,” said Peter Mertens, Senior Vice President of Research and Development at Volvo Car Corporation. The study looked at five safety systems used by Volvo road cars: adaptive cruise control, collision warning, blind spot information, land departure warning and driver alert control. Each system returned solid results but one seemed to outshine the rest. Able to cut down the chances of a highway collision by 42 percent, Volvo’s adaptive cruise control uses front mounted cameras to keep a pre-determined distance from vehicles ahead. According to the study, 51 percent of the total miles covered were done so with the system on and 94 percent of the participants said they felt safer with it activated.

So there you have it...some of the most innovative safety technology is active and Volvo is active in providing it to their customers, a tradition that is 85 years in the making and counting. Find your active and passive safety at Lehman Volvo in York or Lehman Volvo in Mechanicsburg

    Celebrities and Volvos

This month Volvo announced a partnership with one of the most prominent faces of the NBA, Jeremy Lin. Lin will be a spokesperson for the brand in a few different markets for a two-year period. He is a good fit, because like Volvo, Lin is understated, well-educated, and performs at the top without being overly flashy.
But he's not the first star to be tied up with the brand. A few years ago, Richard Branson was used to introduce the Volvo XC90 V8 in a space-inspired Super Bowl ad.

Former Secretary of State, Colin Powel was also a Volvo fanatic....though he never appeared in any Volvo commercials. He drove a classic Volvo PV series. Paul Newman was also a Volvo fan...for the stealth factor alone. He threw some extra performance at his Volvos, going as far as putting high-powered V8 engines in his Volvo 700 and 900 series wagons.
Then of course there are the movies...Volvos are the star cars in a a lot of films. Twilight, School of Rock (try to count all of the Volvos in that film!), Detriot Rock City, Gone in 60 Seconds, The Saint and a lot more.

The "Mad Men" Era of Volvo Advertising

A recent article by The New York Times highlighted the "Mad Men" era of Volvo advertising, and how Ed McCabe helped shape the public perception of Volvo. It's an interesting piece that shows how different the marketing approach was in the was a bit of a "wild west" scene with punchy headlines and quick turnarounds.

Contrary to popular belief, Volvo's first campaigns in the US did not focus on safety, but rather on durability, reliability, and quality...all traits that were lacking in a lot of vehicles on the road.
Back then, when seat belts were optional in some cars, safety didn't sell. It wasn't until the late 60s when safety became a selling point. Volvo's early groundwork for durable cars helped pave a perception in people's minds that Volvo meant safety. It's a premise that rang true back then and still rings true today....minus the traditional "mad men".

A Reminder on Why You Buy a Volvo...

Each new Volvo features enhanced design, improved performance and amazing technology. What hasn’t changed though is Volvo’s commitment to safety, and this picture sent from one of our clients is proof of that commitment.

Lehman client Ashley Matter was involved in a crash on 322 recently, and although her S40 was totaled she walked away from the accident completely unharmed. She recently visited our store to replace her S40 with of course, another Volvo.

There are countless stories like Ashley’s when it comes to the real-world safety of Volvo. Some of these stories end up in the “Volvo Saved My Life Club” books that are delivered to Volvo retailers nationwide.

Tracing the History of the Volvo Luxury Sedan Part III: The Volvo 960

The Volvo 960, released in 1990 as a 1991 model year vehicle represented the next evolution of Volvo luxury sedans, following the 760. The 960 was distinguished with softer edges, and a more flowing design both on the outside, and the inside.
Also distinct was a new 24 valve 6 cylinder engine, producing smooth power and minimal vibration. The 960 continued Volvo's tradition of phenomenal seats and amazing safety.
In 1995 the 960 was re-styled and refined even further. In 1997, the 960 became the S90, to distinguish itself with Volvo's new naming nomenclature (S representing sedan, V representing Versatility and C representing coupe).
Of course, today's Volvo S80 continues the tradition of Volvo luxury with an emphasis on Safety (its been an IIHS Top Safety Pick for several years running) and value...with Safe and Secure 5 year no-charge maintenance Coverage. Find yours in York at or Mechanicsburg at

The Volvo C30: Inexpensive to buy AND own.

The sporty and fun (and of course safe) Volvo C30 starts under $25, its easy to get into one. But its also as easy to live with fact, the C30 has been awarded with a Kelly Blue Book Total Cost of Ownership Award. Details here....
The Volvo C30 has been honoured with the 2012 Kelley Blue Book Total Cost of Ownership Award. Presented at the Chicago Auto Show, the C30 claimed the top spot in the Entry-Level Luxury Car segment, a testament to its remarkable value. The all-new 2012 awards honour current model-year vehicles and brands with the lowest projected ownerships costs, based on Kelley Blue Book Total Cost of Ownership data for the initial five-year ownership period.

"Car shoppers should take the time to compare vehicles on their consideration lists to fully understand the financial implications involved with cost of ownership," said Juan Flores, director of vehicle valuation for Kelley Blue Book. "While a vehicle might be less expensive up front, the cost of fuel for that model, insurance and other expenditures could make it the less appealing choice for their wallet in the long run.

Another Happy Customer: Volvo Overseas Delivery

Here is the latest Overseas Delivery review from one of our clients....

    Every Overseas
Delivery (OSD) buyer will have a different story to tell about their trip, but we’d like to tell you about our two weeks staying in 4 types of accommodations other than hotels. With hotels running a little more on the expensive side, and our prior positive experiences meeting wonderful people at B&Bs (owners and guests), it was an easy decision for us. That said, we both had to buy in that we were choosing an “adventure” that might have some surprises, as we set out
on the web to analyze and choose from the numerous options. So in this article, rather than tell you how wonderful the sites of Stockholm, Oslo and Goteborg were (they were, of course)
we’d like to tell you how we maximized our $2500 Volvo OSD saving with reasonably-priced places to stay.
First, we agreed that since we had never been to Scandinavia that there was more than enough to
do and see in just Norway and Sweden. From there, it only made sense to begin and end our vacation in Goteborg. We flew from Newark to Goteborg over a Sunday night, and did the obligatory sleep-walking Monday, scraping the surface of Goteborg to really just orient ourselves for our return at the end of the trip. Then a sound Monday night’s sleep in the Volvo-provided
hotel prepared us for Tuesday, pick-up day for us. For pick-up we’ll just say that experience was everything Pam Peffer, our OSD Coordinator, had described. By around 3 PM we were headed north on E6 toward Oslo. We had added the Scandinavia maps to our own Garmin but that didn’t come close to preparing us for Oslo’s “roundabouts” or the tunnels in central Norway. Eventually we got headed west out of Oslo on E18 toward our first B&B, only 15 miles from downtown. Back a dirt road in Sollihodga we found the Paradise B&B (no kidding, that is the name), run by Kate and Odd Thrana.
As advertised, our single cabin was within meters of the lake, and not advertised, also meters from the chicken coop. “Fresh eggs from the hens, vegetables, bread, jam, and juice is served in
your freedge”, as stated on their website, so breakfast is self-serve. With only two cabins, we knew our car’s first night out of the factory was safe, right outside our cabin door.
Wednesday morning we struck out for Flam to see the fjords. Being mid-June, the E16 was open
although we often had to drive around trucks removing boulders dislodged over the winter. That night we stayed in a “row cabin” in nearby Aurland, at the Vangsgaarden Gjestgiveri, just a few meters from the fjord itself – and so quite the photo op.
Thursday, after taking the Flam Railway ride, we headed back to stay with Kate and Odd for two
nights straddling our Friday in Oslo; tip: park at the KonTiki museum in Bygdoy and take the ferry into Olso. Saturday we had our longest drive, all day across the E20 to the Malarhojden suburb of Stockholm, and the ATUM B&B , run by Christina Ohlin. Thursday morning
we packed up and headed back to Gotegorg. For our last accommodation we reserved a 3-night rental of a private furnished apartment in the Antilleriagatan section of Goteborg.
We’re sure no matter where you go, or where you stay you will find the hosts to be friendly
and helpful (and speaking English), and you will have a fantastic and unique
    -George Small
