39,000 Nautical Miles....the Volvo Ocean Race

If you think your Volvo covers a lot of miles in a year, consider the sail-racing boats of the Volvo Ocean Race. From October 2011 to this July, the teams competing will have covered 39,000 Nautical miles from port to port.
The Volvo Ocean Race is tough, extreme sport that shows what happens when man challenges the elements in a fierce battle...

Celebrities and Volvos

This month Volvo announced a partnership with one of the most prominent faces of the NBA, Jeremy Lin. Lin will be a spokesperson for the brand in a few different markets for a two-year period. He is a good fit, because like Volvo, Lin is understated, well-educated, and performs at the top without being overly flashy.
But he's not the first star to be tied up with the brand. A few years ago, Richard Branson was used to introduce the Volvo XC90 V8 in a space-inspired Super Bowl ad.

Former Secretary of State, Colin Powel was also a Volvo fanatic....though he never appeared in any Volvo commercials. He drove a classic Volvo PV series. Paul Newman was also a Volvo fan...for the stealth factor alone. He threw some extra performance at his Volvos, going as far as putting high-powered V8 engines in his Volvo 700 and 900 series wagons.
Then of course there are the movies...Volvos are the star cars in a a lot of films. Twilight, School of Rock (try to count all of the Volvos in that film!), Detriot Rock City, Gone in 60 Seconds, The Saint and a lot more.

The "Mad Men" Era of Volvo Advertising

A recent article by The New York Times highlighted the "Mad Men" era of Volvo advertising, and how Ed McCabe helped shape the public perception of Volvo. It's an interesting piece that shows how different the marketing approach was in the was a bit of a "wild west" scene with punchy headlines and quick turnarounds.

Contrary to popular belief, Volvo's first campaigns in the US did not focus on safety, but rather on durability, reliability, and quality...all traits that were lacking in a lot of vehicles on the road.
Back then, when seat belts were optional in some cars, safety didn't sell. It wasn't until the late 60s when safety became a selling point. Volvo's early groundwork for durable cars helped pave a perception in people's minds that Volvo meant safety. It's a premise that rang true back then and still rings true today....minus the traditional "mad men".

A Reminder on Why You Buy a Volvo...

Each new Volvo features enhanced design, improved performance and amazing technology. What hasn’t changed though is Volvo’s commitment to safety, and this picture sent from one of our clients is proof of that commitment.

Lehman client Ashley Matter was involved in a crash on 322 recently, and although her S40 was totaled she walked away from the accident completely unharmed. She recently visited our store to replace her S40 with of course, another Volvo.

There are countless stories like Ashley’s when it comes to the real-world safety of Volvo. Some of these stories end up in the “Volvo Saved My Life Club” books that are delivered to Volvo retailers nationwide.
