Volvo Car USA donates XC40 Recharge to Boston Fire Department for Safety Training

On May, 6 2022, Volvo Car USA provided the Boston Fire Department with a brand new XC40 Recharge in order to educate first responders how to safely rescue occupants involved in an accident with a battery electric vehicle. Because pure electric vehicles require different extraction procedures, the XC40 Recharge will help the Fire Department develop new emergency strategies to ensure safety for all drivers.

As Volvo starts to put more all-electric vehicles on the road, it is important that first responders safely work around the primary battery and high voltage wiring found in such vehicles. Additionally, the XC Recharge is made with high strength steel, requiring first responders to use even more specialized extrication procedures. Although the components of an electric vehicle can have an impact on where first responders should cut into the vehicle, with proper training and safety guidelines, both occupants and first responders are ensured safety.

Made with care, the XC40 Recharge includes a battery safety cage, sealed and cooled battery modules to prevent damage and leaks, brightly colored high voltage wiring to prevent unintentional contact and an easily accessible deactivation switch to shut down all high voltage power.

"As we continue to see a rise in all-electric vehicles on our roadways, it is important to give our first responders the tools they need to be able to perform their emergency procedures effectively and to keep everyone involved safe" states Eric Miller, Vice President of the Northeast Region for Volvo Car USA. Volvo Car USA also plans to donate a XC40 Recharge to the New York Fire Department to spread awareness on safety when working with battery electric vehicles.

Our ambition for 2025 is 50% of Volvos sold should be Pure Electric, while the other 50% be hybrids. The world we live in and the safety for its people are factors we value highly when designing our vehicles, and will continue to lead our mission.
