The Volvo EX90 Reveal

The next generation of Volvo vehicles has been revealed with the unveiling of the new Volvo EX90. The Volvo EX90 represents the start of a new era for Volvo in which a decisive course has been set for a fully electric future. By 2030, the company will aim to sell only fully electric vehicles and aims to be climate-neutral by the year 2040, making this one of the most ambitious electrification blueprints in the automotive industry. The Volvo EX90 is the first reveal in their plan to announce and create one fully electric car per year leading up to their 2030 deadline.

The Volvo EX90 is a true seven-seater, all-electric SUV with classic Scandinavian design. It is a versatile and stylish family vehicle created with modern proportions, cutting-edge technology, and advanced connectivity. Thus, making the Volvo EX90 safe, efficient, aesthetically appealing, while creating a more sustainable family lifestyle.

The Volvo EX90 delivers an estimated range over 300 miles of tailpipe emission-free driving on a single charge. The initially available twin-motor all-wheel drive version is powered by a 111kWh battery and two permanent magnet electric motors together delivering in its performance version 517 hp and 910 Nm of torque. In combination with the brand new chassis, this creates a great and smooth driving experience.

Sustainability

The Volvo EX90 contains approximately 15 percent of recycled steel, 25 percent of recycled aluminium as well as 105 pounds of recycled plastics and bio-based materials. This corresponds to around 15 percent of the total plastic used in the entire vehicle, which is the highest level of any Volvo car to date. The Volvo EX90 is our first car with all the necessary hardware to enable bi-directional charging. This is a technology where you can use your car battery as an extra energy supply. For example, you could to power your home, other electronic devices or even another electric Volvo car. We plan to make bi-directional charging available in the future, starting with selected markets.

Safety

The Volvo EX90 has an invisible barrier of safety inside and out. This is made possible witht he latest sensing technology. The high performance core computers are connected to its cameras, radars, and lidar to create a real-time, 360-degree view of the world around the vehicle. Volvo sensors are designed to respond when you are a fraction too late, they never tire and cannot be distracted.

One of the most notable safety features is the introduction of the lidar system, created by Luminar Technologies, as standard on the Volvo EX90. Lidars, or light detection and ranging systems, can sense surroundings and help the vehicle to avoid obstacles. They use light to create high-resolution images that provide a more accurate view of surroundings than cameras or radar alone and function whether it is day or night, also at highway speeds. This allows the vehicle to notify the driver of obstacles hundreds of meters in advance generating more time for the driver to act and avoid.

The safety measures are also directed inside the Volvo EX90 with the driver in mind. Special sensors and cameras are used to gauge eye gaze concentration. These in-house developed algorithms, allow the Volvo EX90 to understand when the driver is distracted, drowsy, or otherwise inattentive. When this occurs it will alert the driver by first softly nudging, then becomes more insistent if not rectified. If the driver does fall asleep or becomes ill, the Volvo EX90 is designed to safely stop and call for help.

All of the safety features encompassed, the state-of-the-art sensors including lidar, make the Volvo EX90 the first Volvo to be hardware-ready for unsupervised driving in the future.

The core functions of the Volvo EX90, powered by the NVIDIA DRIVE AI platforms Xavier and Orin, Snapdragon® Cockpit Platforms from Qualcomm Technologies and in-house developed software by Volvo engineers, provides an increase in responsiveness and creates a more enjoyable experience inside the vehicle. Combining the state-of-the-art computing power from Snapdragon’ Cockpit Platforms with the visualization capabilities of Unreal Engine, the Volvo EX90 offers lightning-fast computing power and high-quality graphics on the in-car screens and head-up display.

Technology

Inside the Volvo EX90, a 14.5-inch center screen is your gateway to one of the most advanced infotainment systems on offer. It has Google built-in and 5G connectivity as standard where available. Installing one's favorite apps, streaming music, and finding a destination and much more are simplified with the intuitive set-up. The overall user experience is designed on the principle of complexity made simple, avoiding information overload. The infotainment displays positions in front of the driver and in the center stack provide information in a smart and customizable way. The Volvo EX90 will also be compatible with wireless Apple CarPlay or Android Auto

The Volvo EX90 will be the first Volvo car to feature Dolby Atmos, which will be delivered by a reference-quality Bowers & Wilkins audio system. All of which is delivered by 25 speakers, including headrest-integrated speakers for an immersive sound experience. Phone key technology will also be a technology highlight of the Volvo EX90. One's smartphone serves as the key to the vehicle and when approached the Volvo EX90 will automatically unlock and starts a personal welcome sequence. Upon entering, a personal profile will also be loaded automatically. All of the technology joins together in one of the most pleasant and elegant car interiors on the market.
