June 5, 2025, marks another safety milestone surpassed by Volvo Cars with the announcement of the new multi-adaptive safety belt, a world-first technology that builds on the iconic three-point seatbelt.

When Volvo engineer Nils Bohlin introduced the three-point seatbelt in 1959, it led to the beginning of a new safety legacy. Drivers worldwide received optimal protection with a simple pull-and-click, a design that has saved millions of lives over the past 66 years. Now, furthering the legacy, the multi-adaptive safety belt from Volvo Cars ensures your loved ones remain protected on the road, anywhere, anytime.

“The world first multi-adaptive safety belt is another milestone for automotive safety and a great example of how we leverage real-time data with the ambition to help save millions of more lives."

— Åsa Haglund, head of Volvo Cars Safety Centre

Developed and rigorously tested at the Volvo Cars Safety Centre crash lab, the new multi-adaptive safety belt will improve passenger protection by adapting to traffic conditions using advanced sensors. Seatbelts will also uniquely adjust to individuals by analysing height, weight, and crash severity.

Expected to debut in the upcoming fully electric 2026 Volvo EX60, the new world-first multi-adaptive seatbelt reinforces Volvo’s ongoing commitment to safety.
