Volvo Saved my Life

 Volvo Saved My Life

Volvo has a well known reputation for their safety standards, winning an abundance of Top Safety awards throughout the years, as well as pioneering standard safety measures we see in all vehicles today. Ahead of their time, and constantly seeking new technology to keep drivers safe, Many will tell you "Volvo Saved my Life". Where did it start?

Since 1940, Volvo has been ahead of other brands when it came to safety standards. In 1944, Volvo began inserting laminated windshields in all their vehicles, witched helped prevent shards of glass from flying into the driver and passengers when in an accident. The US made laminated windshields a mandatory safety procedure, 25 years after.

In 1959, Volvo saw a huge breakthrough when Volvo engineer, Nils Bohlin, developed the 3-point seatbelt. The seta belt was designed to help keep the driver and passengers from slamming into the interior during an accident. It was not until a decade later that both Swedish and U.S. Government would make seatbelts mandatory.

Volvo is famous for their other safety mechanisms, including backup break system, front and rear "crumple zones", a collapsible steering wheel column that breaks down on impact, and crash-testing using the "Egg Cart" method. The Egg Cart method basically states that if the egg cracks even under the slightest pressure, it is not safe. Volvo built their vehicles the same way.

Over the next couple of years, many Volvo owners started to write into the company and expressed crashes they have lived through because of their Volvo my , and thus the Volvo Saved my Life club began.

The clubs first member was Robin Merrill, who survived an oncoming vehicle landing on the roof of his Volvo after it jumped a medium. The second included Kathleen Zimmerman who, had to be removed from her Volvo via Jaws of Life, her only injury being a fractured bone and a bruised leg. Her children walked away with absolutely no marks or scratches. Robin Nemeth wrote about the time when her and her husband were hit head-on by an ambulance. Not only was there car totaled, but the ambulance was, too! "My husband came out from what was left of our Volvo without a scratch". Peter Parts writes he collided head on with another vehicle going 55 mph. The doors on his 760 Volvo popped up, and he stepped out from the vehicle untouched. The police told him he was lucky to be alive.

Today, many people have become members of the "Volvo Saved my Life" club, and share there stories to Volvo Car USA. It is amazing how many countless lives were saved due to Volvo's strict and advanced safety standards. Because of Volvo's mission, many people are still alive today.
